“Inside the crimson room bloomed with light….the lamp-light,bright on his boots and dull on the autumn-leaf yellow of her hair, glinted along….”(22) As Nick enters the room to his cousin living room he is shown a sense of a dark red almost meaning of a content of what is in the room almost like he is used to the high class living of small parties. He mentions the yellow of miss baker hair as if he can see that she is almost empty inside. That she may look beautiful and great on the outside but, within her is nothing a sense of emptiness.

“Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.”(26) As Nick stops himself from calling Mr. Gatsby realizing the man is in a state of solitude and peace. A relaxing night looking at the sea and the small green light that comforts Gatsby to the extent that a man (nick) stop to not call him and let him enjoy his peacedful bliss. This shows that Gatsby life may have been good on the outside it is not and the he look towards the green light because it might be a light of optimism.

“Occasionally a line of grey cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-grey men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud which screens their obscure operations from from your sight.”(27) When Nick and Tom go out to New York th ey stop in are they call “valley of ashes”(27) and when they do stop they see a multitude of grey. This place is full of discipline a place that doesn’t play or have fun just does their work and lives a very stern solid life. This grey is very professional and makes Nick uncomfortable about being there or even just passing through the middle area.
