Connotation, “the [suggestion] of a meaning by a word apart from the thing it explicitly names or describes” (Merriam-Webster). There are many positive and negative connotations that we use. The book says that Semantics refer to the meaning behind a word, and their primary and connotative meanings. One great example from the movie was how Nell called Jerry her "gaw anja," or translated: "guardian angel." She got this from a passage in the bible about a guardian angel swooping down from the heavens. Nell took this as primary meaning of Jerry, coming out of nowhere to be her friend and help her. Jerry took it as the connotative meaning that he is strong, supportive, and helpful. Jerry doubts that he is her "gaw anja" when he could not protect her from the scientists and the court wanting to keep her from being institutionalized for research.…

An example of this being used is when the author says, “They should find an early opportunity to throw out Grutter v. Bollinger as well, the 2003 ruling approving the policy of the University of Michigan Law School to use race as a factor in admissions,”(Washington Times). This instance is connotative because the author uses the phrase, “...throw out...”, to suggest to just throw away all of the discrimination happening in the colleges, but this phrase is also used to represent throwing away the trash, which makes it be in a negative tone. Another instance on which this happens, is when the author says, “Justices can remedy this, and damage to the law, by throwing out the University of Texas affirmative-action policy,”(Washington Times). This instance uses connotation by including the words, remedy and damage in the same sentence, but they have opposite connotations, which makes them contradict each other and gives the audience things to think about. To sum it up, the article uses connotation to give meaning to the main points and make the audience feel something about the…
