People’s view of water is flawed and the purpose of Charles Fishman’s The Big Thirst is to change the way that people look at water and to increase water literacy. Water is a more powerful entity in people’s lives than it is thought to be and is not appreciated in effect to this. It is used for basic human necessities such as drinking water and bathing; food production; energy production; and for recreational uses. Water in the United States is conveniently available to most when needed due to advanced and developed technologies of the past century. However, because these water services are so efficient, accessible, and reliable to its users today, most people do not think much about where it comes from and are what Fishman considers as water…

Water is necessary for all living organisms on this planet, especially humans. Without water, you will die. You can make it about three weeks without food, but you can only make it about three days without water. I guess you can say that water is pretty important. In Flint Michigan, they can’t even drink their water without a serious risk to your health. About two years ago, the state decided to save money by switching Flint's water supply from Lake Huron, to the Flint River. This plan backfired. Many problems have began to occur as a result, so if we don’t fix this water one major problem soon, this issue will only got worse.…

The differences between the average American’s view of water and the average African’s view of water are outstanding. Americans take advantage of the water that freely flows through our faucets everyday. African women struggle to find, gather, and carry their water to their homes. “The Illusion of Water Abundance,” “The Burden of Thirst”, and “Unquenchable” give unique insight into the way different peoples view the source that gives humans life. This synthesis paper will focus on the ethics of water and will compare the way Americans view water to how people who live in Africa view water. Specifically, it will discuss the effort it takes to obtain water versus the way water is used and appreciated by two different peoples.…

I view literature as an artistic platform which allows individuals to pose questions but provide the answer also. Personally, I feel Literature holds no bounds on age, sex or colour- the sense of empowerment it provides for people to know that they are united and involved with a universal movement beginning with the stroke of a pen becomes overwhelming. And for that reason I felt African American Literature interested me beyond words, as they are celebrating their heritage in a time where they felt alienated by liberating themselves and others. These literary minds were acting as social activist but in their own way- through literature. The autobiography by James McBride: The Color of Water which he tribute to his mother. It explored his story…

India’s water crisis is predominantly a manmade problem. India’s climate is not particularly dry, nor is it lacking in rivers and groundwater. Extremely poor management, unclear laws, government corruption, and industrial and human waste have caused this water supply crunch and rendered what water is available practically useless due to the huge quantity of pollution. In managing water resources, the Indian government must balance…

“The Ganga, especially, is the river of India, beloved of her people, round which are intertwined her memories, her victories and her defeats. She has been a symbol of India’s age-long culture and civilization, ever changing, ever flowing, and yet ever the same Ganga,” (Jawaharlal Nehru). Spoken by the First Prime Minister of India, this quote summarizes the importance of the Ganges River. The Ganges, one of the holiest rivers in the country, functions not only as a source of agriculture, energy, and transportation, but also a spiritual entity for the country. Despite the recent increase of pollution, the Ganges is and will forever remain a spiritually pure place for India.…
