For the 2017-2018 school year, the Amory High School Band has had one of its most successful colorguard captains, Madalyn Schwalenberg. This year, the level of hard work and dedication Madalyn shows is an admirable feat. After wanting this position for a long time, she auditioned in April of 2017, and the work hasn’t stopped since. To Madalyn, being captain has been a life-altering experience, but it has also provided a large sum of challenges. From taping flags to showing up to school early in the mornings, the work required of this position can be time consuming. However, she finds all the challenging work rewarding. The responsibility has been an interesting experience, and Madalyn will continue to…

“Students rose to the challenge of marching at various paces while performing three different tunes and a drum cadence. The color guard lead the band with their challenging, original routines written by the students themselves. I…
I believe that I can accomplish any obstacle that stands in my way and I’m not going to let anything stop me. There have been numerous times this year and last year where I have been the leader and I have stepped up for “The Band” and “My Section” because of the love I have for it. For example: All the trombone “fanfares” and movements have been my ideas and I have collaborated my ideas with the other members of my section which have led to success during the football games. Another example is when the band was entered into the martin Luther king parade (2010) and Mr. Green needed people to stay after and develop a dance routine for the band with alumni and others. I was one of the volunteers to stay and help out which was a great idea because I was able to bond with the alumni and other older college students to get their advice and opinions for not only the dance routine but for my life. Another example is when the band was invited to perform for the faith world fundraiser (2010) and Mr. Green needed a student to be a “Fill-in” drum major for that day. I stayed after to volunteer and I was chosen and after that day I worked my butt off to help Corrine and assist her with the dancing for the performance which was a success for us and the band. Last year was my first year of…
I have involved myself in a multitude of different organizations throughout middle and high school. With everything from experience in scouting, to coaching, to work with Habitat for Humanity, the importance of leadership skills has become evident to me. They have given me experience that has made me more successful in school currently, and I intend for them to help me in my educational endeavors at East Carolina University as well. The experience I will receive in the…
As a member of nearly two years with Seminole, I have been able to experience an atmosphere of genuine love and acceptance that I now hope to further encourage and foster. This will be my sixth year as a part of the marching arts, during which I have had the privilege of playing and marching for two different ensembles, as well as maintaining leadership roles in both (leading two front ensembles and being relied on heavily at my place of prior attendance). With all the time I have dedicated to learning and plying my craft, I now seek to instill in others that same sense of wonder, amazement, and motivation that…
There are many reasons why I want to become an Auror leader, my number one reason is because I frankly feel that my experience in Ursa changed me as a person and I want to continue the personal growth that Aurora has started while helping new students experience the same growth that I did. I have always been dedicated to helping those who are younger than myself. In high school I was on the track team and one of my favorite things to do was to mentor the first year athletes. By doing this I would show my younger teammates correct technique, and how to prepare for meets physically as well as mentally. Now that I am in college I love to help kids from my highschool who are interested in Penn State. I show them around campus, and I gave them…
Many people have heard the saying, there is no I in team. Like any sport, a band can not function through one person alone. While marching, if I did not work together with the other members of the band, it would be a disaster. Marchers would be running into one another, and the music would not line up together. It took everyone working together as one to create a masterpiece.…
One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…
Color guard didn't get better and i was really feeling it but i refused to quit i knew things would get better, and even with everyone think i would quit and give up i didn't. By the end of my first year my parents were back together my brother was out of boot camp and my sister and i were back living with both are parents. My second year i did it i got better not only in color guard but health i did everything i could think of to improve myself there was still hospital stays and emergency room visit but not as much. This was also the year i met my very best friend Chris who helped me improve myself ,as well as given me someone to talk to. By my 3rd year i felt it i had improved i was get to where i wanted to be both health, and color guard wise. Things were looking up, and then i started to get bullied in color guard it would get so bad that i would go home and cry to myself. Honestly if i didn't have the family and friends i have i would of quit it was so horrible i got really sad. Along with that i could feel myself get back sicker and sicker, and after that i ended up in hospital which just made my summer horrible of course there were all the fun color guard events that i would have to miss out on and the fact that the team would no stop posting about which just made everything so much…
Each time I moved I had to start as a ‘newbie’, which prevented me from obtaining a leadership position. However, I still used the qualities of a leader to help the freshmen with their marching technique and memorizing their music. I also assisted my section leader and drum major when possible, tidying the band room after a competition, or passing out water at performances.…
Becoming familiar with team members is the primary method to know the best way to manage the performance of a team. Completing the team charter provided the foundation for team members to express their thoughts and processes of an effective team. As a learning team we established some ground rules: necessity of a team leader, checking in with team frequently, expressing problems early on. Overall, the expectations appear to be similar among all team members: encouraging communication with team members, sharing equal responsibility for the assignments, requesting and accepting assistance when needed from other team members in order to complete an assignment on time. When these expectations are not met it could result in conflict. When conflict occurs, professionalism and a direct approach will work best to manage the situation; we agree this will allow the team members to resolve the matter and continue with assignment.…

Working in teams can be worthwhile because goals that are rigorous can be achieved. Obviously, it feels good to achieve something as a team; therefore, a group of people need to work hard together to achieve it. Sometimes working in a team can be frustrating and hard. Different people approach problems in different ways. It can be very complicated to combine everyone’s ideas of what would work best, but it is very important to listen carefully, keep your cool and find a solution. For a team to be successful, there are some responsibilities that a team must undertake Team members should encourage each other to be committed to their responsibilities, which is for people to try their best at every practice and/or game so they don't let the rest of the team down.…
In the past, I have demonstrated leadership as both the assistant manager of a frozen yogurt shop and as a leader in the University Honors Program as a member of the Honors Student Council. I have also exhibited leadership throughout my academic and sports career by acting as a role model for my peers and leading by example. As a leader, I know that I do not need to be the most vocal, and instead understand that I should set the standard for my peers to follow. My past leadership…
