Columbus' Letter to Isabella and Fernidand
On the 14th of March, 1493, Christopher Columbus composed a letter to Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in regards to his first voyage. In his letter, Columbus claims to have discovered and taken possession of a series of Islands, located on the Indian Ocean, thirty-three days after his departure from Cadiz. Columbus goes on to describe the islands, one of which being Hispaniola, exaggerating their size and riches and suggesting that China lies nearby. Columbus presents the islands in a way that makes them seem suitable for the colonization yet to come. “The convenience and excellence of harbors in this island, and the abundance of the rivers, so in dispensable to the health of man, surpass anything that would be believed by one who had no seen it.” The letter quotes, “…where I discovered many islands, thickly people, of which I took possession without resistance…” Throughout the letter, Columbus emphasizes the natives’ characteristics as being timid and fearful; he declares that he and his crew did not cause these qualities rather that they were naturally that way. Columbus states, “..on the contrary, I gave to all I approached whatever articles I had about me..” Columbus established a giving relationship with the Indians in order to placate them; Columbus hoped to turn the natives into Christians and he thought that in the future they might be willing to gather and send any abundance of items and goods they had to Europe. Overall, Columbus had a respectable opinion of the natives; he saw them as of very clear understanding having gotten an extremely clear description of surrounding territory. “I did not find, as some of us expected, cannibals amongst them, but on the contrary, men of great deference and kindness.” Columbus provided a lack of physical description of the natives. He describes their smooth, straight hair and how they are not black, like the Ethiopians. He also included that they did not wear any clothing, with the only exception

Columbus used words such as “Beautiful Trinkets”(2) “Keenest Wit”(2) and “Extremely Fruitful fields”(2). Where he is saying “Beautiful Trinkets” he talks about what the sailors have including but not limited to the homemade things they have made or some of the items they found out on their journeys. Or where columbus uses “Extremely Fruitful fields” he talks about what the people have done with some of their land by growing large amounts of plantlife and crops to support their needs. Christopher Columbus’ Letter of Discovery rose, very quickly, to the top of European publishing in 1493. His letter spread the news of his voyage, in which Columbus claims to have discovered and captured multiple islands in the Indian Ocean in Asia. Obviously, Columbus was way off in his topography and actually landed in what we know now as Haiti/the Dominican Republic and Cuba. While exaggerating size and wealth, he also claimed, wrongly, that China was nearby. In the letter, Columbus is essentially “sucking up” to the Spanish Royal Court for more funding, he makes vivacious claims of victory and accomplishment, “I discovered many islands inhabited by numerous people.…

Columbus was only doing what any other person under the ruling of a king and queen would have done back then, to serve and please them in any way possible. He wanted to show himself to his king in queen. Christopher of course is known for discovering America, but on the way there he did things that are frowned upon now. On his discovering he made the Natives into slaves, forced them to as he please or they would get punished. Columbus should not be bashed upon for his prejudices and brutality, back then it was all around the world and everybody was doing it, it wasn’t a wrong thing at this time.…

Columbus treated the Native Americans intolerably when he arrived to the New World. Upon arrival, his plan was for him and his crew to exasperate, ravage, kill, mangle, and destroy the Natives, as well as acquire gold from their king (Document 7). He forcefully made Natives strip mountains top to bottom, split rocks, move stones, and carry dirt to the rivers to be panned out for gold; this put great pain into the Natives lives. From the moment Columbus was greeted by the natives, he immediately lost all respect towards them. Their nude bodies were defined as a lack of knowledge, skill, and religion (DeWitt). Columbus wanted to spread the word of Christianity among the Native Americans and at the same time he saw a source of easy profit by enslaving the Indians. Not once did it come to Columbus mind that these lands were not his to take but rather began to rename these islands when he sailed back home he had the entitlement of being “the founder”. During his first voyage, Columbus did not do anything incriminating against the Native Americans because he simply analyzed their culture. When he sailed back to Spain, he returned with many new items as well with kidnapped…
