Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was the first European to find out about America (New World). This new land found changed the whole world. It all started in 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He made trips to America in 1492, 1493, 1498, and 1503. Counting that he made 4 across the Atlantic Ocean to America from Spain. He accidentally found America, thinking that it the East Indies when he tried to find a water west from Europe to Asia. Christopher Columbus, son of a wool merchant, was born in Genoa, Italy on October 1451. Being a son of a wool merchant, he got a job on a merchant ship when he was a teenager. Columbus was on a merchant ship till 1470 when privateers attacked his ship as he sailed north of the Portuguese Coast. The boat sank, but Columbus made his way as he floated to shore on a scrap of wood and made his way to Lisbon. At Lisbon, Columbus studied mathematics, astronomy, cartography, and navigation. At Lisbon, Columbus began to hatch a plan to the change the world forever. At the end of the fifteenth century, it was nearly impossible to reach Asia by land. The route was long and arduous, and encounters with hostile armies were difficult to avoid. Portuguese explorers solved the problems by taking them to sea. They sailed along the West African and around the Cape of Good Hope. Columbus had a better idea. He thought that instead of sailing around Africa, we sail west of the Atlantic Ocean. The young navigator’s idea sounded good, but his math was faulty. He argued that the circumference of the Earth was much smaller than his contemporaries believed it was; accordingly he believed that the journey by boat from Europe to Asia should not only be possible, but comparatively easy. He presented his plans to officials in Portugal and England, but until 1491 the Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile agreed to fund for his voyage.
