Communication Process

Steps of Communication Model
Personal or Business Scenario

1. Sender has an idea.

My family owns a painting business. My mother and I work together a lot. When we’re on a job, it is crucial that we communicate effectively. An example of me being the sender would be when I have an idea or question about the color of the door paint.
2. Sender encodes the idea in a message.
When encoding my message, I will put my thoughts into words that convey my message. This step is important because I want to make sure my translation from thought to meaningful words is clear.
3. Sender produces the message in a medium.
Since sometimes we work in different areas of the building, I have to decide which means of communication I should use. In this example, I will send her a written medium.
4. Sender transmits message through a channel.
Using my written medium, I will type a text message to my mother. I would ask her what color paint I am supposed to use for the door.
5. Audience receives the message.
As long as my cell phone and my mother’s cell phones are working, she should receive my text message. This doesn’t mean she will read or understand it. This just means the message has reached my intended audience.
6. Audience decodes the message.
My mother being the audience, now must decode my message. This is where she would open the text message and read it. Hopefully, using her knowledge, she would be able to assign meaning to my message. I feel that this step is the most difficult. Sometimes, the receiver decodes the message into meaning other than what I intended. This happens mostly over text messaging. That is why it is very important to clearly state my message in a way that I feel
