There are approximately 100,000 professional standup comedians in the world. Less than 1% of that 100,000 are actually well known. Obviously to become famous you have to be great at what you do. But what makes these comedians great? There are a few commonalities between famous comedians such as the fact that most have tv shows, most are raunchy, and they are clever.
First off, the best comedians have their own tv shows. Louis CK has a show that has been on air for 5 seasons. Most self written and self produced tv shows don’t make it past the first season. Having a tv show helps expose his comedy to a broader audience. Daniel Tosh has multiple shows, Brickleberry and Tosh.O. Tosh.O is one of the most popular shows on Comedy Central and has been on for 9 seasons. This long running show has brought Tosh most of his popularity and given him more opportunity in comedy. Jimmy Carr is famous for his one liners and his sexual content. He’s a newer comedian in the states but he’s quickly gaining popularity. Lately his humor has got him on Roast Battle and The Roast Of Rob Lowe, both on Comedy Central. Jim Jefferies is a famous stand up comedian from Australia that probably has one of the foulest mouths in comedy. Like Jimmy Carr, Jim is well known for very inappropriate jokes.
