Communicating Effectively Worksheet
Answer the following questions, using information from this week’s readings. Respond to each question in 100 to 200 words.
1. Briefly explain the five choices speakers can make. How do these elements determine a speech’s success or failure?
The five choices speakers can make are invention, arrangement, style, delivery, and memory. These elements determine whether or not a speech is successful by identifying what belongs in a speech, if the ideas are well organized, the tone of voice the speaker will use, and how the speech itself is delivered. These factors come into play because it is important to know who the audience is and how to address them appropriately, that way they will respond positively. Furthermore if these elements are poorly done the opposite affect can occur and the members of the audience will no longer pay attention.
2. What role does the delivery method (e.g. online, video conferencing, face-to-face, conference room) play in constructing a presentation?
The scene for which a speech is given can have a large impact on the delivery method. Stealing the example from the book you could be presenting inside a large room, this will have an impact on how much larger you will need to make certain gestures so that all members of the audience will be able to see. This area is also impacted depending on the area because it can limit or require the use of certain items like a microphone that needs to be adjusted. Aside from requiring the speaker to alter physical aspects are the mental aspects which can easily psych out the speaker.
3. What is the difference between hearing and listening? What are some strategies you could employ to improve your listening skills? What does it mean to listen critically?
Hearing is the human ear picking up on sound waves and interprets them into audio in which we can understand. Much like a computer which takes analog waves and converts them into
