The Scarlet Letter In the scarlet letter you would find many different things that you would be surprise to find out. In this story the main character is Hester Prynne; Hester is a sinner because she committed adultery. And from that event that happen pearl is born. Hester decided to stay in the town because she wanted to repent for her sins, her love for her daughter pearl, and her love for Reverend Dimondale (The priest and Pearl father). Hester use her needle skill and thread to earn her living. Hester decided to stay in the town because she wanted to repent for her sins. She wanted to stay in the place where she committed adultery . She wanted to stay in the place where her life change forever, nothing would be the same again. A place where she can forget her wrong doing with Dimondale. She wants to repent for everything she has done. According to the book, it says that Hester thinks that pearl is the reminder of her sin and also a gift from god. Hester also wanted to stay because of her daughter pearl. Pearl is everything for Hester, she love her daughter with all her heart. She tries to give an example to her daughter, how she should be. She doesn’t want her daughter to be like her. People think that she is evil but Hester known’s that is not true, that her daughter is evil. Deep inside herself she loves her even if a person thinks she is the devil. The last reason why Hester wanted to stay is because her love for Reverend Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale is the minister and priest of the town. He is the father of Pearl even though he doesn’t know. Hester is trying to protect him from Chillingworth because he is trying to seek revenge on him. Chillingworth is trying to separate both of them, destroying their life’s but mostly Dimmesdale.     One of the prime examples of Hester’s independence in thought is shown in the affair between Hester and Mr. Dimmesdale. In the Puritan society in which Hester lives, it is society’s standard for women to stay in union with their husband no matter if they have problems or temptations. Despite this, Hester goes against society and does what she thinks is right and falls for Mr. Dimmesdale. Fully knowing the penalty and possible outcomes, Hester does what she believes is right and disregards the societal expectations to be with Mr. Dimmesdale. Hester’s love for Mr. Dimmesdale is pure and doesn’t come from lust or greed. This is reflected through the love Hester has for her daughter, Pearl.
