Commentary of ADHD and Suicide
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and suicide are often brought together as one is common with the other. I have reviewed a few different medical references to see if I can get an understanding of if they are connected. There are many ways that suicide and ADHD can be paired together. It can come from the atmosphere or activities they are involved in. It can be caused by treatment or lack of treatments they are on. It can be from the medications they are taking. Working with the topic of ADHD my commentary will stress on the factors of the medication aspect and parental aspect to see if they actually influence the rate of suicides in ADHD diagnosed children and young adults.
Nearly 30% of the children who are diagnosed with the ADHD disorder continue to have problems with it as they continue on into adult hood (Brooks 2013). It is stated that 4 % of the American adults have been diagnosed with ADHD and more that have never been diagnosed (Emmerson, 2014).With the young adults having problems coping with the disorder at the older age sets in more time for depression. Children diagnosed with ADHD and going through the ages of 9 to 18 have more problems with depression and suicidal thoughts. Of adults that have the ADHD disorder are depressed and the level of the depression has to do at what age the depression started. The earlier the age it started the higher level it is as the person ages if not controlled (Mann, 2010). In a study that was posted in March of 2013 of adults with ADHD and diagnosed as children and adults never diagnosed with ADHD showed that 5% more of the adults with ADHD would likely commit suicide. Nearly 57% of the adults with ADHD disorder also have another psychiatric disorder. These disorders can be substance abuse, hypomanic episodes, antisocial personality disorder, and major depression and generalized anxiety (Brooks, 2013) Depending on the
