The book Stiff by Mary Roach is in a genre of its own in terms of book I have read and I loved every word of it and it has found a spot in my favorite book list. For a book like this, it takes time to analyze and process this book for its intended purpose and I believe reading it over a course of several months helped. Despite my hesitance when first approaching the book, that hesitance quickly turned into admiration for the book and all the eye-opening information it provided. Every single page provided something new and whether that something new was disgusting, moving, or life-changing I looked forward to every page and I can’t say that for most books. Every chapter in this book had something different about it due to the fact that this book covers so many parts of a subject that people know very little about. In terms of most surprising and most disgusting chapter, chapter 10 Eat Me takes the human cake. The different ideas people had about eating pieces of human and the cures they associated with them were so bizarre and so
I have never had an opinion be switched in one chapter before and this chapter accomplished it. My whole position on donating your body to science was based around this idea that your body would be violated after death, but I found out that's going to happen either way through natural human decay. The body falls apart after death, whether you donate it to science or not and I would even go as to say dissection after death sounds better than decay. To quote my chapter 3 podcast, “human decay has no barriers” you are going to be a mess, your body naturally falls apart, so why not donate your body to science so you can advance the human race even after your death. Whether not to donate your body science is one of the biggest decisions you have to make and when I do make that decision, this chapter will definitely be in
