Commodity Chains - mini class projects
MBAC 5107
Global Production Networks
Using the production network concept, create a map of the commodity showing the geographical network of material, human and value flows. Then examine one or to of the nodes so that you can tell a story that illustrates an interesting way in which the network is organized or how uneven development is reproduced in the network. Your map is not meant to be exhaustive for the purposes of this assignment. Fill in as much as you can and focus on the story that you want to tell about the production network.
You will be asked to give a 5 minute presentation on your network. You should use Prezi to create the presentation, as it is most suited for such network concepts. You can find Prezi here: http://prezi.com/. If you are new to Prezi, there are tutorials on the site. It is fairly intuitive to use and can be quite fun.

The late twentieth-century and early twenty-first-century trends towards the continuing integration of the world economy have attracted the attention of geographers who seek to assess the impacts that globalization processes have at various geographic scales.1 The banana has a rich history of globalization, and for this reason, this essay will explore the commodity chain that shows the trajectory that the banana takes in order to be produced in the Caribbean, Latin America and elsewhere, then transported through the sea, next entering grocery stores throughout the world and finally consumed in the homes of millions. Commodity chain analyses allow modern day geographers to understand the process in which a resource is gathered, transformed, and distributed as a commodity to consumers. This understanding is critical in the defetishization of commodities and the appreciation of the relationships of those that have created them. Commodity chain analyses are also fundamental in showing the inseparable role of geography within these processes of commodity production.…

Centuries by centuries, life is becoming more and more convenient. For example, people don’t have to walk, they can take cars. In this way, vehicle is an important transportation in our lives. To make a car, chassis is the most necessary part because it consists of an internal framework that supports a man-made object in its construction and use. So, as a commodity, I think chassis is worth to discover. In addition, chassis is becoming more special and even has multiple categories. For instance, regular cars’ chassis is very different from racing cars’ chassis. In my opinion, there is a lot of knowledge I don’t know about how chassis play this kind of crucial roles in vehicle, meanwhile, it is very interesting and people can get lessons from the commodity, chassis. In the paper, I will first describe the history of chassis. As far as I know, there are multiple histories for different kind of vehicles. Sedan’s chassis faced a huge revolution and truck’s chassis are late to be globalized. There is also another new kind of chassis for a kind of racing car named go-kart. After that, I’m going to map the commodity chain to show the globalization of chassis and sites of where it is produced and people who purchase it. Thirdly, relations of production and consumption will be analyzed. It contains the component of chassis, the environmental issues and different human labors in the production line. Finally, the paper will come to focus on labors. I will demonstrate the inequality happened .between workers, who was helped or hurt by this commodity and people’s approaches to lessen the negative impacts.…
