Only in the past two decades has depression in adolescents been taken seriously. Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. Therefore it comes to no surprise to discover that adolescent depression is strongly linked to teen suicide. Adolescent suicide is now responsible for more deaths in youths aged 15 to 19 than cardiovascular disease or cancer (Blackman, 1995). Despite this alarming increased suicide rate, depression in this age group is greatly under diagnosed and can lead to serious difficulties in school, work, and personal adjustment, which may continue into adulthood. How prevalent are mood disorders and when should an adolescent with changes in mood be considered clinically depressed? Brown (1996), has said the reason why depression is often overlooked in adolescents is because it is a time of emotional turmoil, mood swings, gloomy thoughts, and heightened sensitivity. It is time of rebellion and experimentation. Blackman (1996), observed that the "challenge is to identify depressive symptomatology which may be superimposed on the backdrop of a more transient, but expected developmental storm."…

Jessica Portner explains that teenage depression is a silent epidemic (2008, p. 15). Teen depression is one of the greatest tragedies of this century since depression is increasing dramatically. With Portner’s studies and experiments she predicts that by the year 2020, when children reach adulthood, depression will rank as the second leading cause of “lost years of healthy life” (2008, p. 31). Depression can afflict people who are stuck in the situation; it can be confusing, disturbing, and painful – both emotionally and physically. Parents with teenagers facing depression are seeking for help desperately and they are not too sure where to get the help needed to comfort their teenager. There are many warning signs and symptoms that many parents should have the knowledge of, so they could be aware. Also parents also need to learn what causes teen depression, how to prevent depression and how to help their teenager seek help if suffering from depression. Depression brings people down to a joyless state in which they do not see the positive side of any concept. However, with proper medications and treatments, they can be brought back to normal emotion levels.…

Shatkin (2015) has conducted quantitative research that claims that 85% of the 2,240 undergraduates interviewed experience stress on a daily basis (up from 80% in 2008). The increased number of students feeling stressed has been accompanied by an increase in utilization of mental health and counseling services; one institution reported a 29% increase in the use of counseling and psychological services in the last four years and another reported that 40% of the first-year students visit their counseling center. His major clinical interests are mood and anxiety disorders, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavior disorders, and sleep. He is one of the foremost voices in child and adolescent mental health. He has authored more than 100 articles, chapters, and published abstracts throughout his career, along with one book, Treating Child and Adolescent Mental Illness: A Practical, All-in-One Guide (W.W. Norton and Company, 2009), now in its second edition and retitled Child and Adolescent Mental Health: A Practical, All-in-One Guide (2015). [source: Official website of Dr. Jess P. Shatkin]. Overwhelmingly, throughout the past decade there has been a dramatic increase in the number of college students who are diagnosed and treated for anxiety related issues (American College Health Association, 2015). It is reported that over 25 percent of 13 to 18 year olds are affected by some kind of anxiety disorder (National Institute of Mental Health). This means millions of adolescents are negatively impacted by these mental health issues in their daily lives. However, some experts believe that these statistics “...are on the low end of what’s really happening…”, because there are many who do not go to receive care for their anxiety (Schrobsdorff). It is critical that there is an increased availability of school-based mental health programs because it has been estimated that 80 percent of adolescents who have some kind of diagnosable anxiety disorder are not getting treatment (ADAA). This is a breathtaking number of kids who do not receive care, which in turn exposes them to the negative consequences that accompany…

Now we consider the teenagers’ life.At this period they face a number of problems: difficulties in their relationships with parents, problems at school and e.t.c. Young people disagree on different problems: the time to come home at night, doing work about the house, the friends to spend free time with, what clothes to wear and so on. This is only natural: children experience anxiety just as adults do. However, because they have less control over their environment than adults, and are less able to avoid stressful situations, most children have a strong need for parental help and understanding when they are feeling anxious.…
