The topic of Common Core preparing students for college and their careers is a topic of recent interest for both the author and the audience for many reasons. One reason is because common core is the way many students are taught in schools today. Another reason is because the author and the audience may both have the same opinion that common core is not preparing students very well for college or their career. The purpose of the popular article is to talk about the gaps between some core standards and what college instructors think is important for students. Many elementary school teachers continue to use math concepts that are not included in Core standards because they think they are important,

Strauss talks about how there is a gap between the Core standards in school and what colleges and professors consider important for the curriculum (Strauss, 2016). However, the scholarly article In Defense of the Common Core Standards by Joshua Bleiberg and Darrell West talks about how Common Core is setup to define what all students are expected to know and be able to do. Common Core sets standards that every student should know how to do before they continue onto the next grade. The Core standards are not set up to tell the teachers how they should …show more content…
Many people question the way the standards were written and the content of the standards, and many people say it has never been proven to improve the academic ability of the students (Strauss, 2016). The article The Problems with the Common Core by Stan Karp states that there are concerns that teachers found with the Common Core practice . Karp states in the article that Common Core was a better developed curriculum rather than what they were teaching with (Karp,2014) . They said it seemed more flexible and student centered. In the article The Problems with the Common Core it says how it is based on many different claims. One claim is that it will help require more progressive student-centered teaching with strong elements of collaborative and reflective learning. Strauss noted that many teachers continue to teach certain math concepts because they think it is important for students to learn and they are not included in the curriculum.

Chester Finn’s scholarly article The War Against the Common Core talks about how Common Core will not make any difference in student achievement and may cause an unacceptable level of student failure (Finn, 2012). The standards do not boost achievement for the students. Finn also states that it does not carry failure rates either. In the article by Strauss, it talks about how they are major gaps between grades and high

What I would most like to see in the public discourse about the Common Core State Standards would be to separate consideration of the standards from opposition to testing and teacher evaluation. When Bruni indicts parents for coddling their children by opposing the common core he is mixing up the common core state standards with the assessments. But that’s to be expected, many others are doing this too, including those who stand up in opposition to the tests, they often sound like they’re against the CCSS…

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have affected the teaching of mathematics and science in several ways. In transitioning from No Child Left Behind to CCSS there have been two main changes that are responsible for affecting how teachers deliver mathematics and science instruction. With these new standards, there has been a shift in curriculum focus and a shift in the types of assessments used. These changes have greatly affected the lessons and teaching techniques used at all grade levels.…

I came to this conclusion because at the time when this article was published, the Common Core State Standards were only beginning to be adopted, and had yet to be officially implemented in any state. Throughout the article, the authors’ use of terminology assumes that the reader has an educational background, but familiarity with the Common Core in particular is not necessarily assumed. Assumptions that are made are one’s about the reader’s feelings about standardized testing, classroom differentiation, and about the educational philosophies that any reader might hold in general. Public opinion on the Common Core was mixed at the time -- though professional opinion remained cautiously optimistic, the Common Core were largely untested at the point in time when the article was written. Brooks and Dietz’s article is a testament to that, because despite their stated misgivings, they conclude their article…

The Common Core Curriculum dictates the standards that need to be achieved by students and taught by teachers. The adoption of this curriculum means all should be uniform. Teachers should be teaching the exact same content, relatively at the exact same time. I believe this article brings up a great question; is the underlying objective of the Common Core, to make teachers teach to the test? Many of us believe so. I feel this article points out other issues that have a serious impact on a student’s performance. Poverty is one of the factors mentioned in the article that has an even greater impact to a students learning than memorizing facts would (Krashen, 2014).…

The Common Core State Standards Initiative (also known simply as Common Core) is an educational initiative that details what primary and secondary students should understand at the end of each grade in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Common Core's background dates to the 1990s with the inception of what was known as the "Standards & Accountability Movement," which sought to reform the educational standards upon which students were measured in relation to college and workplace readiness. In 2009, at the behest of the National Governors Association, the Common Core State Standards Initiative was officially introduced as policy. The Obama Administration, using federal 'Race to the Top' grants as an incentive, urged the states to adopt Common Core by August 2, 2010, upon which forty-one states pledged to do so, with four explicitly opting out. In addition to the original four states that chose not to adopt Common Core, eight others have (since 2010) withdrawn, Throughout the course of this essay, I will examine both the pros and cons of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.…

On the other hand, the Common Core Standards are intended to do just that, which in my opinion do not benefit our students. The Common Core Standards were created for standardized tests that are not accurate in analyzing students’ knowledge. I believe with the Common Core Standards, teachers are only teaching what the students need to know to graduate high school. By doing this, students are not able to take the skills acquired and apply it to everyday life. A change should definitely be implemented with the Common Core Standards. The standards ought to be significantly parallel to the NCSS and Mississippi Social Studies…

According to Sandra Stotsky (2010), the reading standards of the Common Core do not college-bound students any better than previous ones in Massachusetts and California (p. 24). This is alarming, because in a world where a bachelor’s degree is required for most entry level jobs, preparing high school students to become college ready is critical. How do you improve readiness? De-emphasize standardized testing. Common Core heavily accentuates testing (“Arguments against the common core”, 2014, p. 5). This means that instructional processes are largely replaced by test prep materials, which would result in the diminished role of the instructor and learning principles, such as solving puzzles and developing worldliness. In other words, instructors should encourage learning principles, not standardized tests. To truly prepare students for college, career, and life, de-emphasizing standardized testing and utilizing learning principles are the main factors to improving college…

Most people have heard of the Common Core, but they may not know that it is now in use in 42 of the 50 states in the US. Now that the Common Core has been so widely accepted, it is as well-known as it is controversial. Since I was aware that there were many concerns about the Common Core, I wanted to know more about them. During the course of my research I hoped to discover a number of things. First, I wanted to know exactly what the Common Core is and some about its history. Second, I wanted to know why this change is so important to people. Lastly, I wanted to know why it is such a divisive subject. These questions deserve to be looked into because the Common Core is affecting and will affect many students across the United States.…
