“Common” by the Corner. In this song he talked a lot about his origins. One of the main points in this song was how unsafe the streets were. In this song one of the main messages was violence, how people used to rob and kill to just make a living. In Jay Zs story he talked about how where he came from and how the streets weren't safe. For example, in his article he wrote about weapons, drugs, and the violence on the streets. Jay Z referred to his teen ages as “Life during a wartime” but he says how it formed him as a person and an artist. Growing up in a society full of violence allowed him to voice his anger through his raps.
In Country Songs the cultural narratives are all about appreciating where you came from.
In each song they talk about living life to the fullest and being happy. For example, in the song “Coal Miners Daughter” she talks about how she is proud of being a daughter of a coal miner. She talks about how her dad used to shovel to make ends meat for her and her family. Moreover, in the song “ Chicken Fried” he sings about being himself, enjoying himself, and living life to the fullest, with no worries. Furthermore, in Jason Alden's song he sings about appreciating the “Fly over States” that most people don't pay appreciate. In each one of these songs there is a common cultural narrative of appreciating who you are and where you came from because that is what makes you,
you.
