Communicating Effectively In Spoken English In Selected Social Contexts

1. Introduction

English has become an important language in Malaysia as the society starts realizing the importance of the use of English in this new millennium. It is not only the English language that has been a major concern nowadays, but also oral communication skills in order to become competent in communicating with the rest of the world. After all, for Malaysian to be able to compete, English oral communication skills are essential to success. To succeed in any field, the ability to convey or share knowledge and interact with other people is a concern. We tend to see a lot of people and start communicate to them and make small group. We would like to see the roles of each members and how it work in social context.

1.1 Important of speaking English for study and work purposes:

English has become a world-wide language, with numerous countries adopting it as an official language. English language is a very important language to learn nowadays as it covers a large portion of our life such as in lecture class, workplace and even when dealing with customer. English language important arises as the country itself thriving forward into development in infrastructure, economy and also information technology. In most fields of work our ability to speak English can help us advance our career, helping us to get the job we want and earn more money. In addition, learning English improves our prospects for employment. Nobody can deny that English is the Universal Language.

1.2 Basic principles of effective speaking skills :

According to Wood (2009), there are three basic principles that explain the oral communication which is the first is the interpretation of symbol creates meaning. In communication, word is actually a symbol which does not have it own meaning and to interpret the means that it carries, one must look at the people and their action in
