Communicating In Forums - Anthony's Dilemma To me, it is very important when speaking in class forums that I choose my inclusive phrasing well. One should never make assumptions when communicating in forums and phrase comments as if in a "professional" setting. When posting most of my responses to discussion questions, I try to address a specific person and usually not the entire class and base my response accordingly. The first error that I feel Anthony made in his response to the class was "Hi guys." It appears in the phrasing of his greeting that Anthony assumed the class was all male. Although, this does appear somewhat sexist, I however would not take offense to this type of greeting per say as it is typically a gender-friendly greeting. I do feel that the rest of Anthony's response regarding his experience at the company conference was quite sexist, namely, how Anthony was surprised that the female or "lady" as he called her had "many good things" to say. I personally would not have mentioned the gender of the speaker, but just referred to the "speaker" at the conference. Most of Anthony's discussion response focuses more in context with males attending this conference just by using some of his descriptive phrases such as "the good ole boys" and only mentioned the male managers, which would lead one to assume there were no female managers present. Anthony should have used language such as "Hi Class" or Hi All." Also, Anthony could have been more inclusive with his descriptions of the managers, such as, "The managers and their families. I would think that Anthony's concern over not offending anyone to me shows that had he had a face-to-face conversation in the same language, the response may not have been interpreted as sexist. Anthony could have clarified himself differently in his response. In conclusion, Anthony's

A key point to keep in mind while communicating in a class forum is using inclusive language. Inclusive language is the practice of not excluding a certain gender in the text. Terms like “man,” and “woman,” can often offend others because it might sound like you are excluding, or alienating one or the other. Also pointing out that the presenter was a “business woman” and you were surprised that she had some good points may make someone think…

Disentangling the concerns over her interpersonal skills from concerns about the way a “lady partner should behave” becomes almost impossible. Furthermore, the qualitative nature of evaluations was supported by the premium Price Waterhouse placed on a candidate’s ability to “deal with subordinates and peers on an interpersonal basis” (Badaracco 3). Hopkins was placed on hold in the evaluation process along with male employees who also demonstrated questionable interpersonal skills. Her ultimate rejection from partnership may have been based partners simply not seeing her “fit” with the company regardless of her gender. Furthermore, the firm expressed concern that partners who have “a potential for abusing authority can cause serious long term problems for the firm” (Badaracco 3).…

As a hall counselor on campus dealing with scenario three, I would carefully analyze the entire situation from both perspectives. For example, what detail triggered Anthony to become upset? Why did the advisor assume Anthony likes wonton soup? what tone of voice did the advisor use when he suggested the restaurant to Anthony. It is important to understand that when people judge others based on their ethnicity or culture, they neglect a large chunk of who those people really are. There are two types of people, some that would be upset and others that would accept it as normal and move on. Either way, in today's society we are facing a large amount of prejudice, which implies people who have a negative attitude toward a specific group of individuals. Although in scenario three, the advisor did not have a negative attitude towards Anthony, Anthony still felt offended because the advisor pre-judged that Anthony enjoys eating "wonton soup" since he is from China.…

In society, there are different ways that a male or female should present themselves and what is normal for them could be weird to others. In “Honor Code” by David Brooks, he explains what it is like for a boy to be in school and the ways it is the school's fault for their learning troubles. Deborah Tannen’s, “His Politeness Is Her Powerlessness,” persuades her readers to see that women are viewed as powerless, while men are the powerful ones when it comes to things like communicating. Inferences can be made after reading these articles about whether these authors wrote because of personal experiences or just what they have seen. Also from personal experience, many people most likely see things that follow or go against gender norms.…

His boyish looks make him seem to young for politics whereas in comparison his political opponent Stephen Harper is a older male who is settled down giving the framing that to be a true candidate in politics one must be older more mature, this is not a clear definition that Trudeau is not able to run a country. Trudeau has made mistakes in the past from being young which the Conservative party is sure to mention to the public to get votes. By the Conservatives exploiting Trudeau makes Stephen Harper look good as a candidate. The media itself puts into societies minds that a political leader of the country should follow certain qualities. They are as follows; to be masculine, take charge and make decisions that will help all, put aside the personal life, engage or communicate with people and to be confident just to name a few. Through these gendered stereotype’s Trudeau is no reason he does not fit under these categories, his voice may be higher pitched and less monotone as Harpers but this is not a linguist reason for him to be categorized into a female role. Trudeau has put aside his personal life; only the conservatives pull out his past to put him down as a leader. He engages people through communication and this specific event is a way to specifically focus on women and their concerns and questions yet media easily takes this and makes it become a sexist event, which was…

I have learned a lot from this assignment, it has shown me how much society has grown from its past views. However, we can also see how much we still need to advance in other areas. Men and women have always been said to be completely different. However, this assignment has shown me that both genders deal with many similar issues. Both men and women have high expectations that society placed on us through the media. Growing up we are unconsciously receiving rules and expectations on how we need to act, speak, and look. Both men and women are told to act and feel a certain way. Jack Katz allowed to see how much men are hindered by these unsaid rules.…

People need to be aware of others and the way of communicating to others as they need to understand what you are saying. Remember, if someone does not what you have said, it might have not explained yourself clearly enough. Always be careful to ensure that you communicate with people using their preferred method of communication. The choice of words will affect the relationships with colleagues and those using services so be careful about what you say and how you say it. That is why I also to elaborate on the Logos-skills that was necessary for me to obtain so as really fit in. One of them is communication skills. According to educator and researcher John Swales in “The concept of Discourse Community”, intercommunication and relationship are essential in such communities. It has always been interesting to me to see how people and most especially professionals react when that is predominantly populated by one gender and instead of both this include the way interacts in the workplace with a person of an opposite gender. There are two areas within communication that really got my attention; they are: how does your gender identity affect you as an asset to an organization and is one gender effectiveness better than the other or is inferiority complex that has been passed down through times.…

For this class, I have participated in the class discussion in a somewhat unorthodox way. As a distance student, I have difficulty speaking in in-class discussions but I do the best I can. I listen respectfully to other students' remarks and arguments within the class and make note of them to aid my studying for the final exam. I pose questions out loud and find answers within the lectures, the textbook or even Google. Whenever a question is asked to the class, if I know the response I shout it quite loudly at my computer…

In any discourse community, communication is a key factor. In the game of soccer certain terms are used on the field, off the field, and during practice. Common vocabulary words used in the field are Man-on...which means a player on the opposite team is approaching, through ball... passing the ball between two opposing players to your teammate, get-wide...when one player on the same team needs to spread out to open up a pass. These three terms are a select few of the many ways players communicate on the field. The language from the game continues off the field, but there is a slight difference in tone and dialect. For instance on the field people shout out in an intense voice because they are communicating in the heat of the game, whereas after…
