Case History

What I will show in this paper is how nutrition can directly impact a person's experience of dementia and how poor nutrition can advance physical and psychological symptoms. Also I will attempt to show with evidence from a case history that as poor nutrition advances the severity of dementia will also advance, it also raises the need for hospitalization and/or institutionalization which in turn can worsen and develop into full malnutrition. A report released by the national association of care catering showed that patients with dementia who are undernourished may show rapidly worsening symptoms of dementia and their overall health. It is not uncommon knowledge that nutrients and vitamins sustains a person life and that lack of these essential nutrients can slow down healing, prolong infections and sustained over time can be fatal. The case I will show resulted in the death of the patient directly caused from dementia symptoms. The case involved a 62 year old male who was diagnosed with down syndrome. He was a resident at a north Liverpool care facility. He was initially diagnosed with the early stages of dementia in March 2010. Although his care plan did show that this person, who we shall call R for the duration of this case study, was sometimes resistant to being supported, he did however have a large appetite. His appetite did not correspond directly to his height and weight, at just 5 foot 3 he weighed 9 stone 2 pounds. His normal everyday breakfast would start off with a Banana, followed by a 2 shredded wheat with sugar and milk, followed by a slice of toast with Jam, followed by a juice containing a fibergel and then a coffee with full fat milk and sugar. This would be followed by 2 further meals of the same size, and cake during the day as well as a snack. 6 months after initial diagnosis R showed signs

Unfortunately, dementia is a progressive disease, for which there is currently no cure. This means that Winston’s existing symptoms of confusion and forgetfulness will gradually get worse and will eventually result in death (World Health Organisation, 2012). Notwithstanding, those diagnosed with dementia are often offered medical and psychological treatments that are designed to either delay or improve the more debilitating aspects of the disease (NHS, 2013).     I have been working for a while in the Nursing Home and I have met patients with different situations. We have been dealing with more Nursing residents but getting to know with Dementia patients is very interesting. I have met Mrs. E which had been discharged from the hospital. She couldn’t communicate properly on what she wants, even her family are having a problem to recognize the things she liked and wants. It was a challenge for us to help her in her daily personal hygiene and especially eating and drinking. When she arrived we tried to comfort her and made comfortable.
