E-mail: An Effective Medium of Communication in a Virtual Environment "Communication acts to control member behavior in several ways. Organizations have authority hierarchies and formal guidelines employees are required to follow. When employees must communicate any job-related grievance to their immediate boss, follow their job description, or comply with company policies, communication is performing a control function" (Robbins & Judge, 2013, p. 338). Communication is an important technique that enables employees to express their feelings and concerns about activity occurring in their workplace. Without it, organization goals would not be met, and employees would have a difficult time interacting with one another. A medium of communication that is most effective in a virtual environment is e-mailing. Communicating via e-mail ensures that the information that is being conveyed is maintained. When utilizing this form of communication, management and lower-level employees must apply it effectively to assure that it facilitates their communication flow. "Using it inefficiently as a tool to manage virtual teams can be inundating and confusing, but applying it effectively helps facilitate the team 's communication flow" (Osman, n.d., p. 3). E-mailing allows management and lower-level employees to build an ongoing dialogue that also assists them with fostering long, lasting relationships. In the scenario regarding James Dion, utilizing e-mail to communicate with him about his behavior would be an excellent medium of communication. Lately, James has been frustrated with work and other activities that are occurring outside of his work environment. During team conference calls, his team has observed that his negative attitude is affecting their energy and morale. As a marketing manager, I would inform
