Assessment Activities
TASK ONE (P1, P2 and M1)
This task enables you to show your knowledge of effective communication.
Write an essay, in which you explain the role of effective communication and interpersonal interaction in a health and social care context.
First of all, do a short introduction on the importance of good communication in health and social care between colleagues, service users, and why multi-agency working is important in effective communication.
Then continue your essay by describing the following, and give examples of how they would be used in health and social care:
Communication forms: text messaging, written, oral,
Interpersonal interactions: non-verbal communication, formal and informal communication Communication and language needs and preferences: Makaton, symbols, communication passports, and variation between cultures.
Now, continue your essay, and discuss (look at different points of view), and giving health and social care examples of, the theories of communication. The two theories to be discussed are:
Argyle’s stages of the communication cycle (used in 1:1 communication) and
Tuckman’s stages of group interaction (used in group communication)
Extend your essay, to include an assessment of the role of effective communication and interpersonal interaction in health and social care with reference to theories of communication. This will give you the opportunity to link P1, P2 and M1 together. TASK TWO (P3, P4, M2, D1).
It is now important to understand the factors that influence effective communication and personal interactions in health and social care.
Produce a booklet that helps professionals to understand the factors which influence communication and interactions. Your booklet needs to be in A4 format, and may include colour print, images and have a creative layout. You must include health and social care examples and the last page must be a list of support associations.
Your booklet will explain the factors that may influence communication and interpersonal interactions in health and social care environments and explain strategies used in health and social care environments to overcome barriers to effective communication and interpersonal interactions
ASSIGNMENT BRIEF 2014-15
It must include:
Environmental factors effecting communication: Setting, seating, time
Barriers to communication: Sensory impairment, disability, aggression, submissiveness, jargon, use and abuse of power and effects of alcohol / drugs. Possible strategies to overcome barriers: Staff training, assessment of needs, promoting rights and relationship building, confidentiality, defusing aggression Aids to communication: Human (advocates, translators) and technological aids (hearing aids)
Accompany this with a short essay (approximately 2 pages), in which you
Review 2 strategies and 2 aids to communication (covered in your booklet) that are used in health and social care environments to overcome barriers to effective communication and interpersonal interactions. You must do this in depth and use examples to show your understanding.
Extend the essay further to evaluate those strategies that overcome barriers to effective communication and interpersonal interactions. Think about more challenging and complex situations faced by health and social care professionals, for example, communication affected by mental health problems, drug or alcohol or dementia.
This whole task includes pass, merit and distinction criteria, and you should work towards achieving it as a whole.
TASK THREE (P5, P6, M3, D2)
Now that you have learned the theory of good communication and interpersonal skills, you will draw on your knowledge and understanding to demonstrate your skills in a health and social care context.
With a partner, participate in a 5 minute role-play activity, with a health and social care theme. This will be assessed by your tutor. One of you will be the professional and the other will be the service user, and demonstrate examples of good communication skills. You must not just read from your script; you will be assessed on both verbal and non-verbal communication. Submit your script and witness statement, signed by your assessor.
You must show that you are able to communicate well in terms of the following:
Listening and responding, tone of voice, language used, proximity of conversation, clarifying or repeating understanding and use of good questioning.
You must also participate in a group interaction in a health and social care context
You will be put into small groups, and you will decide on a recent health and social care hot topic. Research this topic, prepare and present it to the rest of the class.
ASSIGNMENT BRIEF 2014-15
You must all participate in the preparation and the presentation. Evidence will be in the form of the slide hand-out, evidence of planning and an assessment statement from your tutor.
You must show that you are able to be effective in a group, show good interpersonal skills and have a positive attitude.
Assess your communication and interpersonal skills in relation to each interaction in a reflective journal entry. To do this, use examples from both your interactions (oneto-one and group presentation) to bring together different aspects to form an honest assessment of your own skills.
Go further, and evaluate factors that influenced the effectiveness of each interaction. You will need to consider a range of positive and negative factors that influenced you and you should also show that you are able relate to the theory aspect of this assignment.
This whole task includes pass, merit and distinction criteria, and you should work towards achieving it as a whole.
