McCarthyism was a campaign against communist infiltration of government administration in the United States during the 1950-54, launched by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. A Senate committee named the Tydings committee(The Subcommittee on the Investigation of Loyalty of State Department Employees), found the allegations baseless and criticized McCarthy(Reeves,1982). In 1951 he accused former Secretary of State George Marshall to be involved in the communist world conspiracy. As chairman of a committee of inquiry in the senate during the 1953-54 he continued his accusations of alleged communist activity in the state administration. McCarthy's conduct during televised hearings on Communist infiltration in the army in 1954 damaged his reputation, and in 1954 the Senate condemning McCarthy's methods(Reeves,1982).
