In my view there are many pros and cons of the requirement of a community based learning course. A pro is that it makes the student more well rounded and prepared for the when they graduate and engage with their communities on their own. Another pro is that it facilitates many feelings for students that they may not know that they could become in contact with prior to the course such as empathy. The cons of a community based learning course is that the student is may not be in the course voluntarily, and they may not be getting the full benefits of working with their community as a student that would sign up to do service learning on their own.
How
might you use your academic major and its associated knowledge base to address community issues?
My major is centered around the community as a whole, therefore, I have a general knowledge base to address community issues. Last semester I completed my community nursing course and learned a great deal about the needs of Inner City Reading, such as the availability of fresh food, the quality of the side walks, and resources available to them. I also learned how to connect with individuals in the community and empathize with them. Nursing has given me the skills to assess a community situation and how to implement ways to help the community improve for the better.
What connection do you see between societal issues and individual responsibility?
The connection I see between societal issues and individual responsibility is that of beneficence. Beneficence is doing for the common good. It is ones individual responsibility to help resolve societal issues for the common good of their community. With out individual responsibility, individuals would not realize the impact of societal issues on themselves and others.
