Community Emergency Assistance Program
Please provide additional information concerning your extracurricular, individual, or volunteer activities. (Maximum 600 characters.)
I came here to the United States to further my educational goals. I had always dreamed about becoming a helpful person not only for my family but also for my community since I was a little kid. I have always thought that I am extremely lucky to be given the opportunity to study abroad; hence, I try to make the most of my time here which is spent doing volunteer work. A program in which I spend most of my time volunteering is called Community Emergency Assistance Program (CEAP) that supports those who are not fortunate enough to go to school, or have a place to live. CEAP does not only give me valuable pieces of knowledge and experiences but also helps me understand that there are many people who are still suffering greatly and are desperately in need of our help.

Besides that, I've also gain the chance to join a group called "Angel Group." By doing that I was able to meet some people and join some activities with those people, some of whom have metal and developmental disabilities. I learned how to knit wool hat and played with them. They made a lot of different sizes of hats. All of the things they make are then donated to hospitals for newborn babies. Additionally, I was also a member in Cecilia choir at the St Anne- St Joseph Hien church. I participated in the choir and all other events in the church for approximately 3 years. I am also a member in phi theta kappa at North Hennepin Community College (NHCC).

Furthermore, I used to take part in many activities in the Vietnamese community such as fashion shows in some festival and New Year fairs. During the year 2011, I was awarded the first runner up and miss friendliness help. This was one of the many social activities I participated in that help me improve myself and gave me the chance to meet and established relationships with people.

Besides all volunteering, I have been

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I learned that a healthy life begins at home, and a clean and well-constructed home contributes to good physical and mental health.…

Ever since I was young, I was always interested in the idea of helping people other than myself. I never knew the actual meaning of truly helping another person until October, 2010, my freshman year. My resolve for helping others sparked into a flame when I visited a church in San Jose where I experienced something that would completely change my life. At this church, there was an organization called Milal that helps take care of people with disabilities. It was in that place that I was able to learn the true meaning of helping others.…

I am a church member and musician at Revival Tabernacle. By being a musician, I find myself working with the talents and ideas of others as we come together on one accord and produce a skilled sound. I am also currently a student at Jones County High School. Being a student, I am a service to other organizations at school by being an usher for Graduation and also the Chorus Department. My recent involvement in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and DECA has enriched my knowledge of the business sector and how we all come together as a society and produce great ideas. In these organizations, I was able to be a holiday helper at local Nursing Homes to bring cheer to the residents. From my participation in these organizations and activities, I learned that it is better to give than receive. I was able to gain experience with dealing with the public and also give people a sense of comfort and love.…

In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore…

This organization helps cancer patients find needed bone marrow donors. Finding donors are very difficult and finding matches are even more unlikely. This event made me realize how fortunate I was. I began volunteering more regularly with the same organization as well as places such as Food-share and a retirement home with residents who have memory loss. SAM and the retirement home mattered the most to me because I have close relatives who have schizophrenia and have died from cancer. Volunteering with these organizations made me realize how fortunate I was and inspired me to keep striving. This gave me a new perspective on life and I became more optimistic and outgoing. In addition to volunteering, I found a job, I began weightlifting, and I became much more social. In changing the way I think, I learned that life continues and that I still have time to improve myself.…

Growing up, I have always known that I wanted to do more for the world. I wanted to help people that were hurt, disabled, or disadvantaged. I’ve always thought the world could be better if we stood up for one another and make each other’s days. My parents taught me while growing up that giving back is always more important than all the material things I could receive. I became a member of a girl scouts pack near my house and we always assembled fundraisers and donated what we made to local charities. When I decided I didn’t want to undertake the responsibilities of a girl scout, my dad introduced me to Special Olympics.…
