Community Health Nursing Vs Community Nursing
Community health Nursing is a population based nursing practice which promote and protect the health of a population, while Public health nursing is “the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences” Public Health Nursing Section (2013).It focuses on improving all population health by emphasizing prevention, and attending to multiple determinants of health. It is almost impossible to talk about public health without including community health because there are many connection between the two. The main goal of both community health and public health nursing is to attain an optimal health and wellbeing for all individuals through education, primary prevention and
health promotion activities. They are both population based practice. With that being said, it is clear that public and community nursing share similar emphasizing principles of ensuring a healthy lifestyle for individuals, families and various communities. Even though community health and public health goes hand in hand, there are still some distinctive features that separate the two. Whiles community health nursing focus more on individuals and families within a population, public health focuses on groups of communities and populations within those communities. As a result, the public health nurse looks into providing healthcare needs for various communities through research and evidence based practice. In addition, public health nursing also deals with globalized issues through researching and working with other healthcare teams in different countries to provide care for populations across the globe. Community nursing on the other hand is more localized and does not deal with globalized health problems. To my understanding, all nurses have to give patient care in different settings and in different aspects of nursing. Since student are still in school and learning about the different aspects of nursing, I believe student nurses can play a role in public health by applying their learned skills in primary prevention and health promotion through outreach health programs across the country and volunteering in different researching and community health promotion activities.
