In my opinion these all intertwine in the sense that diabetes and obesity are risk factors of heart disease. The number one causes of death for residents of East Harlem, are heart disease and cancer. But I will focus on heart (cardiovascular disease). Heart disease is prevalent in the community and can be attributed to the low income and lifestyle choices individuals make in the community. As indicated in the community lifestyle above, the smoking and unhealthy eating lifestyle is a major cause of this disease or problem. Although its treatment and prevention methods are simple, it’s still the leading cause of disease not only in East Harlem but in New York city in general. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases involving the circulatory system and includes strokes and heart diseases. According to Community Health Profiles (2006), the heart disease hospitalization cases in East Harlem has increased by 10% in the past decade. Residents had an average annual heart disease hospitalization rate in 2003-2004 that was more than 80% higher than the Manhattan rate and 45% higher than the rate in NYC overall (2,706/100,000 vs. 1,489/100,000 in Manhattan and 1,856/100,000 in NYC)…

Health disparities are a continuing issue, especially in America where there are many different socioeconomic hierarchies that can affect the level of health care. These health disparities refer to the different groups of people and how diseases affect each group. There have been many studies done to identify the health disparities driven by socioeconomic status (SES). Most all of the studies have provided evidence that racial and ethnic minorities tend to receive lower quality health care than the non-minorities (APA, 2015). Acculturation is another concept related to a culture that could explain ethnic disparities in health outcomes (Egede, 2006).…

    Health Concerns in Kuwait

In Kuwait, some determinants of health include factors such as policy making, biology and genetics, social, environmental, health services and individual behavior. For example, in Kuwait there are very little policies against smoking. This in turn lead to many adults and kids in Kuwait to undertake smoking as a habit. On the other hand, in places like Europe, smoking is prohibited indoors, this prevents people from undertaking smoking as a habit because they always have to leave indoor places to go smoke. The second factor that determines health is biology and genetics, many people in Kuwait marry their cousins, this leads to accumulated diseases in the genes, which leads to health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure and more serious diseases. The third factor that determines health in Kuwait is the social factor. For examples, in Kuwaiti culture, feeding children so much is seen as good and that it is health while it leads to child obesity. Another factor includes the environment, in Kuwait there is a lack of neighborhood recreational space that leads to lower levels of neighborhood satisfaction and higher levels of obesity; therefore, lower overall well being. Also the positive psychological benefits of natural space in urban neighborhoods should be taken into account in public policy and land use. One of the most important determines of health is individual behavior. In Kuwait, individual lifestyles include an unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. This is the lifestyle that most people in Kuwait follow which leads to obesity, diabetes, and high…

Secondary interventions are used when primary interventions fail to prevent the disease from occurring. Secondary interventions are steps taking to restore patients’ health by relieving or stopping signs and symptoms of the disease. In the case of asthma, primary intervention is least likely to prevent asthma events from happening. This is because asthma is multifaceted in nature and causes may be unpredictable. Signs and symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness remains the same no matter the contributing factors that lead to an asthma attack. Consequently, a secondary intervention is the most appropriate step to take after an official diagnosis of asthma. The use of medication is the most effective secondary intervention to control asthma. Different medications have being proven to relief all physiological events that occur during an asthma episode. These medications fall under two umbrellas of asthma medications: preventer and reliever medications. Preventer medications are used to minimize the occurrence of asthma events and reliever medications on the other hand aid the patient during an asthma attack. In a study by Lasmar et al (2009), 80% of those who use preventer medication suffered least over the duration of the study…

According to Alma Atta declaration V, “Governments have a responsibility for the health of their people which can be fulfilled only by the provision of adequate health and social measures. A main social target of governments, international organizations and the whole world community in the coming decades should be the attainment by all peoples of the world by the year 2000 of a level of health that will permit them to lead a socially and economically productive life. Primary health care is the key to attaining this target as part of development in the spirit of social justice.” This declaration was not attained because of HIV and AIDS pandemic which emerged during 1990s. This compromised health systems and every sector was affected and this generally affected our economy.…
