History Ancient architecture and archaeology can be used to explore the idea of community and the lives of ancient peoples. In conceptualizing an ancient community, scholars are able to follow the trends that occurred in that society. Community and social units explain how the people in the area of Aphrodisias. By investigating this site at Aphrodisias, the buildings reveal that it was Roman and that the people lived there since ancient times and possibly even since the prehistoric era. Aphrodisias was probably founded in the Late Neolithic era possibly around 5800 BC and it was continually occupied all the way through the Bronze and Iron Ages (Mac Sweeney, 140). Ancient buildings here reveal people who worshipped gods and goddesses. Furthermore, there was a relationship between politicians as well as the families of politicians to specific gods and goddesses. Like most societies, the upper classes would have had private tutors. These could have been people captured in battle or who became enslaved in some other way or they may have been paid. Because of the different languages spoken in the area as displayed around the ruins, the people were probably quite literate and spoke more than one language. Roman politicians and priests were also important. Based on the ruins and the inscriptions it appears that this was a community that was definitely Roman and heavily influenced by Greek culture. Themes that appear throughout include the play of the gods and goddesses in the everyday lives of men and women.
