Community Interview

This piece of evidence is community interview paper. I was required to find an agency that serves individuals and interview the person in charge regarding the service they provide to individual with disabilities. Questions included in the interview consist of “what type of agency is it”, “what interaction does the agency have with schools, youth, families”, “what services does the agency provide”, “eligibility requirements for the services”, etc. After completing the interview, I created a Smore Flyer to advertise the information acquired. The Smore Flyer is an example of an advertisement that I could offer parents/guardians to learn about transitional agencies available in the area. I completed my interview on Project SEARCH, an internship program for young adults with disabilities. The Smore Flyer and interview were created and adapted to meet the assignment requirements for my Career, Vocational, and Community Education for Youth with Exceptional Needs course (Education 368).
I have placed this artifact under InTASC Standard 9, Professional Learning and Ethical Practice, because it displays my ability to engage in ongoing professional learning,
share this learning with others (learners, families, other professional, and the community), and adapt practices to meet the needs of each learning in my class. This piece of evidence display that I see myself “as a learner, continuously seeking opportunities to draw upon … […] … research … […] … analysis and reflection to improve” my teaching 9(n). For example, I conducted research on an agency present in my current community, analyzed how my students could utilize their services, and presented the information in a friendly manner for students, parents, and other professionals. Additionally, this piece of evidence displays by ability to “access resources to deepen … […my…] … understanding …. […in order…] … to create more relevant learning experiences” 9(e). This is seen in the completion of the Smore Flyer; I am deepening my knowledge of agencies and community resources that I can make available to my students completing the transition process, and possibly utilize in my own personal community-based curriculum. Finally, the article displays my ability to seek “community … […] … resources, within and outside the school” setting 9(d).
Standard 9, Professional Learning and Ethical Practice, is important to my career as a special education teacher and/or an elementary teacher because I will be required to continue my education, of educational policies, instructional practices, resources available, etc.
to teach my students in the most effective form possible. Through creating this artifact, I saw firsthand how I can inform students, parents, and other professionals of the agencies available during transition and post-school planning. Informing students, parents, and other professional of these resources will aid in implementing them into the students transition plan. Finally, this information will help me, as a special education teacher, create goals and objectives to prepare students who wish to utilize these selected services following high
school.
