This needs to be department wide. We have a Community Involvement section; however, they are spread thin covering schools. People think community policing should be done by those individuals in that section, and that is where we lose what we really need to do. The Community Policing concept is for all 69 sworn becoming involved with the business owners and residents in their districts. And having a proactive mindset when it comes to community policing.
When police officers meet the citizens, they serve, it’s often in a time of need, or trouble. It would be great to see all sworn getting out of their cars and just talking to citizens when their working in your yard, so it starts to bridge that gap. When you see, some kids playing basketball or throwing the football, join them for 5 to 10 minutes and they will remember that positive interaction with the police. A little proactivity goes a long way. People will feel comfortable and give us more information because they will tell us about that person speeding in their neighborhood or they’ll tell us about something strange going on in their neighborhood.
