Community Service: Mandatory or Voluntary

Community service is a topic that is highlighted in our society. Many people have different reasons for their participation in the service, having it be done for selfish reasons or unselfish reasons. However, participation is mandatory. This being the case, community service should be voluntary.
Community service holds you back from doing certain things. High schools require 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. If you don't complete these hours, it'll keep you from moving on. Certain jobs require you to complete community service in certain tasks. Not doing such can earn you a penalty. Another example to support this claim is a quote from an article titled "The Benefits of Volunteerism, If the Service is Real", is that "there is some cynicism among people that some portion of community service is prompted by students interested more in resume-building." This goes to show that people have lost the initial purpose for community service as a pass off to make themselves look good, rather than doing it for the cause alone.
In addition, voluntary community service is more encouraged than mandatory. In the graphic "Attitude Toward Offering Students a Chance to do Community Service to Earn Money for College, By Age", students were surveyed on whether or not they were in favor of doing community service for earning money for college. The survey was done from ages that ranged from 15-25 years old. Throughout the age range, the percentage of students who favor for community service to earn money or don't favor varied. However, those favorable remained high in the 80% while those unfavorable remained low in the 20%.
However, community service should be mandatory in certain situations. In the article "A Better Society? Or a Better Resume?", mandatory community service is stressed. Model

Should the United States require all adults to perform one year of community service by the age of 30? I personally think this is a topic that is not at all, relevant. I believe if someone wants to lend a helping hand, then they should lend a helping hand. If you don't prefer to do this kind of community service, the government shouldn't force you to do so. There would be a lot of change in how community service is done today if the government required at least one year to be served by the age of 30.…

Community service is unpaid work and is often granted to those who commit crimes. It is frequently used as an alternative for prison (The Probation Service, 2015). Being on community service allows the offender to take initiative for his or her actions. “The emphasis of community service is not on punishment nor on rehabilitation; rather, it is on accountability” (Delens-Ravier, 2004). In order to guarantee that the offender is completing his or her volunteered work, they are being supervised by a probation officer. Probation officers are performing regularly checkups to ensure that the parolee is staying on the right track. If any violations occur, it is the responsibly of the probation officer to point those out in court (The Probation Service, 2015). Those who violate any of their requirements are more than likely to be thrown in prison. The main goal of community service is to allow the offender to repay their victims or their communities for their criminal activity that may have affected them in anyway (The Probation Service, 2015). However, that being said, the offender does need to realize that he or she cannot threaten nor come in contact with the person that they have intimidated. Community service can be very beneficial in both punishing the offender for his or her wrongdoings and at the same time teaching these criminals how to develop people skills and responsibilities. Many criminals commit crimes because they do not know how to function in the real world. By completing community service programs, it will allow the offender to progress with their engagement in the workplace and hopefully go out and get a job.…
