Comp 101 Reflection

As I thought about what I would write for this, the first question I asked myself was: what kind of writer was I when I began this course. The answer to the question would be not a very good one. I struggled big time with grammar and punctuation when I began this class. I also struggled with my writing process. I learned quickly this year that I would not be able to just sit down and write an “A” paper without doing much prep work and tons of research on both sides of an argument. One of my biggest takeaways from Comp 101 was how to rely on my classmates for help. I know that as a writer I still have room to make major strides in the grammar and punctuation areas of writing. While writing a paper I would need multiple people to look at my paper multiple times to check for grammar mistakes. Although I am still not comfortable writing a paper without having people check it for mistakes, I know that I am much better in that department than I was when I began class. What I learned while picking up on my grammar mistakes helped me in other areas of my academics as well. I found myself scoring higher on the reading and writing portion of the SAT because I knew what to look for when it asked for grammar mistakes.
Through that essay, I also learned that making outlines and adding steps to the writing process that felt like a burden before was very useful. The “College Essay” taught me a lot about the writing process early on, but it was also my favorite piece that I wrote this semester. The essay helped me take a more in depth look at the colleges that I am considering and helped me realize that my college decision should be about a lot more than just athletics and has helped me feel better about the way I am leaning when I was able to compare all three on
