Competency Standard 4

As a CDA candidate it is my job to establish positive and productive relationships with each child’s families. This means that candidates must establish a positive, responsive and cooperative relationship with each parent. I must engage in two-way communication with families, encourage their involvement in the program and to also support the child’s relationship with his or her own family.I believe that is important to establish trust and respect, as well as keeping open communications with the parents and or guardians of the children in your care at all times. This should be done by welcoming the parents/ guardians while picking up and dropping off children. Also the parents should be kept aware of all that is happening in their child’s classroom. How I will ensure that families are kept aware of what is happening in their child’s daily and weekly lives in the program is by having each child have a designated binder in the classroom that will contain all of the child’s artwork, writing samples, and all other work they complete in the classroom. Also a newsletter and emails will provide an open line of communication that will provide families with information about current/upcoming events and also any classroom needs or important news.
As a CDA candidate I must also ensure that I am aware of what is happening in each child’s home life. How I plan on doing this is by regularly communicating with the parents. I will show sincere interest in what families share and also exchange information regularly with parents about their child’s life in the classroom and their routines while in my care. I will also be sure that parents keep me aware of change in care, favorite activities, and upcoming developmental expectations. Being aware of this will directly affect my teaching practices because it will explain if children are having a hard time concentrating, behaving or grasping a topic. This will also help me decide which teaching techniques are best for each child. This is why the Family Questionnaires are very important for teachers. The help us to learn if our teaching techniques are working for all children, and also what we should change to help children learn the best way possible for them. The questionnaires we received from the parents certainly made me want to keep up my teaching the way I have and meet my goals. But I would still like to keep improving my teaching techniques so I can always do my best to be a great teacher. As a CDA candidate my role is to establish positive and productive relationships with families. I will try to use these skills to the best of my ability to ensure the best outcome for the parents, children, and I.
