INTRODUCTION
Compaction is the process of densification of soil by reducing air voids. The degree of compaction of a given soil is measured in terms of its dry density. The dry density is maximum at the optimum water content.A curve is drawn between the water content and the dry density to obtain the maximum dry density and the optimum water content.
Dry density = Where : M = total mass of the soil V = volume of soil W = water content

OBJECTIVE
To determine the compaction characteristics of a soil specimen by Proctor’s Test.

APPARATUS
Compaction mould with the capacity 1000 ml , rammer (mass 2.6 kg) , detachable base plate , collar (60 mm high) , oven , weighing balance , large mixing pan ,strainght edge , measuring cylinder and sample extruder.

PROCEDURE
1. The 20 kg of representative air dried soil sample passing on 37.5 mm and 20 mm sieve were taken.
2. Adequate water on soil sample were added to bring its water content about 7% or less than the estimated optimum moisture content.Leaved it for some time.
3. The mould and the plate were cleaned.
4. The mass of the mould with the base plate were taken.
5. The grease was apllied on inside of the mould.
6. The collar was attached to the mould.
7. The matured soil was remixed.2 or 3 kg soil were taken and compacted it in the mouldin three equal layer using the rammer at 27 blows per layer.
8. The collar was removed.
9. The excess soil was cutted with the straight edge.
10. The mould was cleaned from out side and it weight was recorded.
11. The sample was taken from the mould.keep a representive soil

Soils have been classified according to a system developed by soil scientists and the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Using this classification system of soil orders, pick two locations on Earth, one in your current area and another area, and describe the order and the conditions that define it. (See Figure 4.12 in the textbook.)…

Over cultivation is the practice of repeatedly cultivating and growing crops more rapidly than the soil can regenerate, leading to a decline in soil quality and productivity. Preparation in growing crop and after the harvest of crop, the soil is left exposed to erosion. Water and wind cause this erosion to take place. Plowing is frequently considered necessary to loosen the soil to improve aeration and infiltration through it, yet all too often the effect is just the reverse. The weight of the tractors cause the soil to become impacted which makes the soil more susceptible to erosion.…

There is a common misconception that evolution occurs randomly. This misunderstanding incorrectly assumes that natural selections itself is random. However, even though randomness plays a part in the process of evolution through genetic mutations, it does not necessarily stipulate that species evolve without cause. Genetic variation occurs randomly and is determined by the fitness and success of a species. It is directly related to its inherited traits with the context of its local environment. The mechanism of evolution controls and ensures that the process is non-random.…

Soil properties: Some physical and chemical properties of the soil were measured, which are presented in Table 1. The availability of nutrients and even contaminants depends on the degree of soil acidity. The most suitable pH for soil microorganism’ activity is 7, as nutrient solubility depends on soil pH changes (Riser-Roberts, 1998). The soil used in the present study has neutral pH and therefore does not limit the activity of microorganisms or the solubility of nutrients except for phosphorus.…

The compaction of soil can be defined as an increase in its dry density, and closer packing of solid particles or reduction in porosity (McKyes,1985).In other words, soil compaction is a dynamic soil behavior by which the state of compaction is increased (Gill and Vanden Berg, 1967). Soehne (1958 ) determined that for arable soils compaction could be described by the following relationships: n = - A ln P + C Where, n = porosity, C = porosity obtained by compacting loose soil at a pressure of 10 psi, A = slope of the respective plotted…
