Starbucks Coffee originated in 1971 as a coffee and tea café opening in a small neighborhood of Seattle, Washington (Starbucks Corporation, 2010). Starbucks continued its service for Seattle residents for a decade when the new director of retail operations and marketing, Howard Shultz, decided to make some beneficial changes to the company. After two years of employment Howard Shultz decided to expand Starbucks outside of the Seattle area. In 1987 Starbucks was entering in the coffee market and the few numbers of Starbucks were now becoming a corporation (Starbucks Corporation, 2010). Fast forwarding to current times, Starbucks is now located across America and has branched out into international territory. Mr. Jax Inc. has successfully grown into one Canada’s largest clothing apparel company. We have grown to be the 6th largest and had four successful acquisitions. Our success in the past eight years has shown our revenue stream at 1500% and profits at 500%. Over the last 2 years, the company has been in a loss position due to aggressive growth and operational costs. Profit margin has declined from 23.52% to 9.91% as a result of increased selling and General Administrative costs outpacing sales revenues. The ROA for 1987 was 8.59% and for 1988 4.65% is declining due to aggressive growth acquisitions that are ailing business and hence effecting the ROE for 1987 was 13.35% and 1988 was 8.34% trending downward as well. C&F Apparel,

C&F Apparel faced constant challenges of developing good forecasts and maintaining product availability. The main question for Bill Smith, director of business planning for C&F Apparel, was whether or not adopting similar approaches such as “fast fashion” apparel makers Zara could work for his company. Either way, the assumptions in this case is that although it keeps cost low, is outsourcing most of its products from material and assembly plants located in the Pacific rim (while being in North America) worth waiting the two to three months for it to ship? Perhaps C&F should look into the cost-benefit analysis of outsourcing so far away and looking at more domestic sources, such as what Zara has that supplies them in typically two to three weeks. If C&F weren’t outsourcing as much, they could get their products in faster, and thus getting to customers faster. This could also help with fashion trends as waiting two to three months for shipment could be outdated than other similar sized sports apparel and active wear companies. While looking at their previous sales in certain products, its also important for C&F to see how those products demands are looking for their competitors in the same industry.…

    Beauregard Textile Company

    • 1960 Words

In a desire to increase the company’s working capital for the company’s future financial investment in a plant modernization and expansion program, Beauregard Textile Company increased the price of its Triaxx-30 product to bring its profit margins up to that of their other products. In a sequential-move game theory Calhoun & Pritchard, Beauregard’s primary rival, did not raise its price even though its costs were assumed to be similar. As a result, Beauregard’s unit sales dropped significantly as their customers purchased the cheaper competitor’s product, causing Beauregard’s profit contribution to decrease. A closer examination of Beauregard’s cost analysis revealed that it includes fixed costs, which when excluded, the decision to raise the price of Triaxx-30 was unnecessary. Thus, when Beauregard raised its price, it was in the best interest of Calhoun & Pritchard to leave their price unchanged. In the end, Beauregard needs to reduce its price to its previous level in order to regain the majority of the market share and increase their profits.…
