'Company Town: Seduced By A Juicy Burger'
For the last several years, fast food resteruant Carl’s Jr. has been implementing an advertising campaign that any regular TV watcher would find themselves being familiar with. The commercial is simple: an attractive young woman, preferably a model, wears something seductive and eats a Carl Jr.’s product while moaning. In Dan Neil’s article “Company Town: Seduced by a Juicy Burger” published in the LA Times in 2009, he jokingly criticizes not only Carl’s Jr., but other fast food giants that have employed a similar advertising strategy. Neil finds himself conflicted by the commercial featuring model and cooking show host Padma Lakshmi.     With the advents of technology, advertisements depict women as desirable commodities this has poisoned the minds of many young women ultimately morphing values and beliefs. Women are shown in subordinate, submissive, and male pleasing roles. Media and advertisement representation reflects and reinforces sexism in society today. The social standards of beauty and feminism are set by Hollywood’s greatest celebrities. They do this by alluring women into buying cosmetic products affirming the concept of female beauty. Companies such as “bebe”, apply the same technique to persuade women in buying their apparel. In the ad “bebe”, the company portrays a woman holding a bright red lipstick getting off a taxi while flaunting a revealing dress. On the other side, she is shown obeying all rules, in bed with black revealing lingerie with an enticing text, “9pm to 5am obey all the rules, you miss all the fun”. The ad amplifies its message and allures its audience to disobey all the rules if they want to become “the bad girl” by purchasing “bebe’s” apparel.…

    In “Commodify Your Dissent,” Thomas Frank implicates “Advertising teaches us not in the ways of puritanical self-denial (a bizarre notion on the face of it), but in orgiastic, never-ending self-fulfillment.” In these lines Frank denotes that the marketing and business industry no longer promote selflessness and conformity as it did in the 60’s.     In the early 2010’s fast food, with health twists was popular. The population was becoming more worried and conscience about what they fed themselves and their families, and this, combined with the always-busy, modern-day society in need of quick meals, gives an opening for fast-food restaurants like Taco Time, Chipotle, and Taco Del Mar to spot light their greasy-burger-free, and sometimes organic, menus. In 2010 Chipotle released a commercial called “Scarecrow” showing an animated scarecrow witnessing the cruelness and fraud and of big food corporations, and then starting his own organic restaurant, which the audience assumes is Chipotle; all to the tune of “Pure Imagination” covered by Fiona Apple. Funny or Die, a well known comedy web site, made a satire of Chipotle’s “Scarecrow”, called “Honest Scarecrow”, which changed the lyrics and added other words, images, and sounds in order to mock Chipotle’s, and other restaurants’, emotional and exaggerated way of advertising. “Honest Scarecrow” by Funny or Die, released in 2013, convinces fast-food consumers, to not let ads determine where we eat, because ads can be misleading and can play on emotions.…

But how often do we pay attention to the real sense of those ads and the ways the advertisers try to sell various products to us? In her essay, "‘The Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt': Advertising and Violence", Kilbourne looks very deep into the connection between abuse and ads. She develops a theory in which she emphasizes dehumanizing women in ads, and shows us what terrible things sometimes can be concealed behind a simple and funny ad, and what consequences it can lead to in the end. The ad shows a well-dressed husband standing with his wife, both of whom look happy. The man is wearing a suit, and the woman is dressed to clean with her apron on and hand duster. The ad shows the husband saying, “So the harder a wife works, the cuter she looks." On the bottom right hand side, you see a little comic of the husband and wife again speaking to each other.
