The United States of America’s government has progressed significantly since the Mayflower landed in 1620. What was once dominated by an unjust monarch once dominated is now governed under a fair and democratic republic. Despite this progress, it is important that one takes the time to step back and analyze our roots and the environment in which we live now. By doing this, one gains insight into how different governments function and how their country is affected by the government. The contents of this paper will be devoted to contrasting and comparing the US government to the government of Belize.

Both nations utilize a formal legislature, judiciary and executive branch. Each branch possesses their own unique powers and practices checks and balances with the other two. However, whereas the US governmental branch are completely reliant and subservient to each other and the constitution, the Belize government must answer to the Prime Minister, and finally, the Queen. On the other hand, both Belize and the US boast an official constitution by which they must adhere to. Government at the lower lever functions similarly. The US is a government based on federalism, meaning that governmental power is split between the state and national governments. State government are allowed certain rights, such as the right to control their own education and infrastructure. However, states must adhere to the national government and the Constitution, as the city must adhere to the state. Belize is similar, as each region has its own judicial, legislative and executive powers. However, the judiciary consists of a single magistrate and the legislature is represented by councils. The councilors are headed by chancellors through whom requests and complaints can be made. Also, the executive branch is led by a mayor, who possesses many of the same powers as the Prime Minister, except on a reduced scale.
