Beowulf is portrayed as a confident and courageous warrior. He has taken on the challenge to try and defeat Grendel, a fierce monster who has taken over Heorot, a great hall. Beowulf said “I swore that I would do this dead or perish at the hands of Grendel.” Beowulf defeated Grendel and later battled and defeated Grendel’s mother.
