New York is described as one of the meanest cities in the United States. People go about their days completely oblivious to the lives of others. In 1964 Kitty Genovese was brutally attacked. Her attacker stabbed and raped her. The woman screamed for help throughout the ordeal but none arrived. Witnesses reported hearing the screams but none sought or provided help for the woman. No one was overly concerned. This apathy for the plight of another human being struck researchers Darley and Latene. They decided to direct an experiment at the university where the attack occurred. Students from the school were brought on for the experiment. Each person was brought into a room and told to converse with another over an intercom system. Subjects were…

In the first six days of the experiment, all subjects were water deprived the entire day except for 20 minutes of access to water. After which, in the pre-conditioning phase they tested the white light in different intervals to ensure that the white light itself did not evoke any fear like behavior. In the conditioning phase, Burdick and James paired the white light for 30 seconds followed by a shock. After several trials, the rats began to associate the white lock with shock, and began to display freezing behavior in response to white light alone. Then, the rats underwent 40 extinction trials. To test for spontaneous recovery, they removed the rats for 1,3, 24 or 72 hours, and then returned them to the lab chamber. After which, they presented the rats with water and displayed the white light to see if rats would associate the light with shock and freeze, thus suppressing their water licking motion.…

How would you feel if you were captured in a laboratory and forced to smell toxic fumes until death? Or immobilized in a restraining device for hours? Or have your skin burned off and spinal cord crushed? This is the reality for more than 100 million animals worldwide. In Canada, over 3.33 million animals are used in experiments and over 125 000 are subjected to severe pain. The animals are left for days to wait in fear of the next terrifying and traumatic experiment that will be performed on them. Major effects of stress and boredom trigger neurotic behaviors in the animals these include spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own hair and biting their own skin. Days go by, and after being locked in their tiny cages filled with fear, their journey usually ends with death. Animals are said to be used for advances and safety checks in products, but are the tests truly…

Every good story has interesting main characters that the reader can follow. This includes the stories of “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe. It's no secret that kittens typically don't like water. But, that didn't stop someone from dropping a pair of kittens in the worst place possible; at a lake. Luckily, there were a couple of surprised fishermen out there ready to pick them up. Surprisingly, the kittens could swim pretty well considering the way they felt about the water.…

Once more to the Lake is an essay written by E.B. in which the author tries to establish the links of his present life with his past experiences when he was a little boy. The essay starts as a father and son go to the lake, which was a favorite place for camping and fishing of the father when he was a child. The father is full of expectations as the lake symbolizes his youth ages and the most careless period of his life. So the decision to go fishing again on this lake may be regarded as an attempt to return childhood or at least to return childhood impressions and memories.…
