Due to the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans Turks in 1453, the silk road became much more dangerous and difficult to traverse which led to sailors trying to find a way to Asia by way of the sea. Columbus made four transatlantic voyages in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502 under the sponsorship of Ferdinand II, Isabella I, the Catholic Monarchs of Aragon, the Castile and Leon in Spain.
