“Remember” and “The Cross of Snow”6
The two sonnets provided, contain negative connotations towards death and remembrance. However, the sonnet “Remember” By Christina Rossetti contains a different perspective from the poem “Cross of Snow” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. By using literary techniques such as emotional appeal, imagery and the use of repetition is presented to express the emotion of sadness and loss.
The first sonnet given, “Remember” by Christina Rossetti is foreshadowing death and gives the idea of “forget and smile” of negative emotions come from remembering a person’s death. The poem overall contains a calm yet a sad tone towards the author wanting to be “remembered”. Two lines from
the poem is a great example towards the author main perspective towards remembrance. “Better by far you should forget and smile/ Than that you should remember and be sad.” The word “remember” constantly repeating can be interpreted as a message as a plea to not be forgotten without having to go through the grieving process.
The second sonnet, “The Cross of Snow” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is very different from the first poem, its going through the process of someone’s death. The poem contains emotianal appeal, the reader gets the feeling of haunted and the sadness of the speaker. It contains very descriptive thoughts that everything has not changed since the speaker’s loved one has died. This implies that the speaker is in the state of drepression and refuses to move on. The quote “..through all the changing scenes. And seasons, changeless since the day she died” presents the idea the speaker is stuck in the grieving process before appecting death.
