It is caused when the body produces too much growth hormone. Gigantism requires immediate treatment. Gigantism is first thought to be growth spurts which make it harder to detect.
There are few cause to gigantism. They include McCune Albright syndrome, Carney complex, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, neurofibromatosis, and most common; a tumor on the pituitary gland. The other causes are very rare. The gland controls many functions of the body. When a tumor grows on the gland it causes the body to produce excessive growth hormone. The size of the tumor can possibly determine the different symptoms the person experiences.
With gigantism, symptoms vary depending on the person and their condition. The symptoms are hard to notice at first, but eventually the child becomes much larger than the other children their age. It is possibly for the child to have disproportional gigantism. Most common symptoms include large hands, feet, forehead, jaws, lips and tongues; and thick toes and fingers. If the tumor is large it can press on nerves in the brain, which causes headaches, vision problems and nausea.
