The country stretches from sea level, all the way up to about 13,000 feet. The tallest peak in Taiwan is called Yu Shan or Jade Mountain (Geib, 2004). To the right of the mountain range, is where just about no one lives. It is only a little bit of plains and then the ocean. To the left of the mountain range, and north, is where all the people of Taiwan live. These areas are classified as coastal plains, terraced flatlands, basins and foothills (Pike). Most people live in the northern or west coast of Taiwan where the is best suitable for the population. Taiwan has a surprisingly high number of rivers. Most of these aren’t very long except one called the “Tan-shui River which flows northward to the mountains and passes near Taipei before emptying into the Taiwan Strait” (Copper, 2017). This river passes directly through Taipei which makes for beautiful scenery just like the entire island offers. The soil in Taiwan is relatively good because of its volcanic origin but has weakened in richness due to tons of rain and irrigation.
