Compare And Contrast Emancipation And Boy's Life
In the beginning of summer break after fifth grade, I got in trouble with my parents for staying out too late. I had gone to my friend’s house, and my parents both said I had to be home at 9:30. I ended up coming home an hour after that time. I got grounded and had to stay inside my house all day, but all I wanted to do was go to my grandmother’s house, my friend’s house, or the swim club! I wanted to be anywhere but inside my house; I wanted to escape. Likewise the animal in “Emancipation: A Life Fable” and Cory in “Boy’s Life” both wanted to feel free so that they could leave. In both of the stories, their themes have similarities and differences. This essay will outline the similarities and differences in theme of escape in both of these stories. Although at first the animal in the passage “Emancipation: A Life Fable” didn’t want to leave the cage, after a few minutes his instincts for escape kicked in and he ran. The text states in “Emancipation: A Life Fable” that, “the door which accident had opened is open still, but the cage remains forever empty,” reveals that the animal did not return. Likewise in the story, “Boy’s Life,” the boy just wants to start his summer vacation. In the story, “Emancipation: A Life Fable,” the animal was given everything and didn’t have to hunt for food, water, or shelter. All of his things was given to him and he didn’t feel the need to escape until the cage door was open. The text stated, “Hungering, food was ever at hand.” In the story, “Boy’s Life,” Cory, the main character, wanted to leave school for summer break so bad. The text stated, “The classroom was empty. I could hear the echoes fading.” He wasn’t like the animal that had to escape by himself, he was freed by his teacher. Cory stated that

    This Boy's Life is the autobiographical account of teenager. Toby and his mother's search for financial stability and a peaceful life. Toby’s family was split down the middle as a child, leaving his father and older brother on the East Coast and, for the most part, uninvolved in Toby’s life. The story begins when Toby and his mother, Rosemary, leave her abusive boyfriend in Florida to take their chances at becoming rich on uranium mines in Utah.     Intentionally the authors of all three stories have decided to drag the theme into the main characters taking the step from childhood to adolescence.
