Compare and Contrast of the Namesake In The Namesake based on the book and movie by Jhumpa Lahiri, there are several events and scenes that are interpreted differently throughout the film and book. The book is based on Gogol Ganguli, the son of immigrant parents Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli who struggles with his double identity and rebellion towards his family. The movie is quite different with its focus on the parents and their relationship more than Gogol, the main character. The characters in the book that are portrayed by the actors in the film are very important because it subtracts and diverts the focus of Gogol’s struggles who is the heart of the novel. Mira Nair the producer of the film is very selective of her characters for the movie. She chooses Tabu and Irfan Khan to play the parents, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli. These characters are wonderful actors but since they naturally have strong personalities, it translates into their parental roles and that provides the gateway to their impact of their identities in the movie. At the beginning, the adjustment of Ashima in the United States is centered on and that’s the story throughout the entire the movie. The constant struggle to find her identity in a different country is evident in the movie and it seems to be the focal point along with her throes with her husband’s death towards the end of the movie. In comparison to the novel, the identity of Ashima is not the core of the story. Gogol takes the center stage of the novel as the story was intended to be. His struggles with his double identity and his rejection of his family is carefully highlighted by Jhumpa Lahiri throughout the novel. For instance, the movie only shows Gogol spending only a few days at Maxine and her parents when he lives with them permanently. Although the movie does a poor job of showing this piece, that portion of movie does display the Gogol’s complete rejection of
