Compare and Contrast Essay: Iroquois vs Bushmen Creation Story
Compare and Contrast Essay: Iroquois vs Bushmen Creation Story
Creation is one of the most controversial topics ever to roam the earth. Some people seek to explain through religions while others try and use science for the same purpose. Two examples of this are the African Bushmen and the Iroquois Tribe. Both had a different take on the same story of creation.
One important fact to see is that both of these stories are started the same way. Both state that humans lived in places other than the surface of the earth. Both state that those humans lived in absolute peace and harmony in their communities. There was no pain or suffering in the mythical cities. No sun was present in either land though there was light to see by. Population of the new world is the ending point of these myths.
Though these stories are very much alike, they are also very different. One of the biggest differences was that the Bushman lived with a being called Kaang under the earth while the Iroquois lived in the sky. In the one story, Kaang created the world for the people below then brought both the people and animals from the ground to see his world. On the other hand, the other story tells of a woman that was pushed from the island in the sky who was saved by the birds and beasts of the water. The bushman story tells of the order that Kaang gives about not making fire. When this fire is constructed in disobedience, the animals that lived with the people so long began to flee. Alternatively, the woman that was pushed from the sky was saved by existing animals. These animals proceeded to build land for the woman and help her in giving birth to twins. Unfortunately, while one of the children was kind hearted and good, the other was considered evil and hated. Finally, while the Bushmen were the people that populated the earth, only one woman came from the sky. The people of the Iroquois creation myth were created by the nicer of the two brothers.
These myths reflect many similarities and differences. Each has its own new components, but also many that seem to reoccur. While the bushmen had a being that helped them, the Iroquois had only wo brothers who constantly fought to win over each other. Both of these myths are very interesting.

Over 400 years ago, the Powhatan Indians inhabited a place called Jamestown, Virginia. Their every-day life was disrupted, though, when, in 1607, a ship carrying men from England came to claim their land, making Jamestown their new capital. This could have been seen as a bright opportunity for both parties: the Powhatan Indians could have shared their knowledge of the land they occupied, and the English could have shared some of the skills and technology brought over with them. But, of course, the two groups found that they had many differences. They had a hard time sharing and trading because of how different they were, such as in their belief systems, materials and resources, and their living environments to name a few.…

But the differences in the stories are the fact that each story has a different topic, each story was told by a different Native American tribe, and each has different beliefs and symbols. Each story shares a separate similarity with the bible story of how God created Earth, humans, and animals. God commanded that the water would come together and make dry ground which he called land, this can be compared to the story of The Earth on Turtle’s Back where instead, land was dragged up and then spread rather then pulled together and formed. God used clay and water to create humans which is very similar to the Navajos belief in the use of corn and buckskin instead. Finally in the story When Grizzlies Walked Upright, grizzlies were cursed to walk on all fours and never speak; in the bible story God just creates all animals how we would see them today on the fifth day of his…

The different stories about how the world was created between numerous diverse cultures are called origin myths, which are stories that explain how things came to be and are probably the first stories human beings told. There are many similarities and differences between the Cheyenne Myth, “How the World was Made,” and the Hebrew Story, “In the Beginning,” that show how each culture views its’ God and humanity’s relationship to each of these. While both stories have animals being created before the humans, it shows the power of a greater being which is perceived differently for how they each treated the animals or humans and how they created the earth.…

The Iroquois creation story is similar to the biblical story of creation. In the Bible, God is credited for the making of the universe and all the non-living things and living things, including mankind. The Iroquois creation story talks about two worlds, one is full of light and mankind and the other world is full of darkest and monsters. This description is comparable to the idea of heaven and hell. According to the bible, heaven is a place full of light, beauty, and this place is where God and his angel reside. While hell is a place full with darkest, pain and anguish. The sky woman is the creator of the universe, just as God is the creator in the biblical story. The good son (good mind) can be compared to Jesus. While as the bad son (bad…

A story that explains how all things came to be and what gave everything meaning. A story that lies the foundation for all beliefs and expectations for the culture. A story that will be told for all generations. It may never be known which story is the true one. One of the more interesting comparisons in cultures is that of the Native Americans and the Puritans.…

In the early 1800s, White settlements were expanding westward. This threatened the Cherokee land which was located in the Southeastern part of the United States. This left the Cherokee with a big decision to make for their entire tribe. Would they relocate West ,or stay for the White settlements to invade where they call home. After all, the Cherokee had owned the land for over 10,000 years. It was not the United States’ land to take. This is why many of the Cherokee Nation felt the need to stay. Others wanted to move because they felt that if they did not, then the United States territory would override the Cherokee customs and they would have to follow United States laws. Clearly the best chance of survival for the Cherokee was to stay in…

The Cree and the Iroquois have a lot in common. Both the Cree and the Iroquois have gone through the routine Native American problems of self-determination and land controls, yet the Cree, possibly because of their sheer numbers, have weathered these problems much better. The Cree language is one of the few North American languages likely to survive into the next century, while the Iroquois Indians have been much more assimilated into the American world.…

The myths share four main archetypes, while “Woman Who Fell..” has a fifth, different archetype. Archetypes are universal understood symbols that appears repeatedly in stories from different cultures and across time. The first archetype that they share is a world covered in water, the earth is flooded and has no land. This part relates to the Bible story “Noah’s Ark” when the whole earth flooded and was covered in water. The second archetype that the share is a Life-Giving Tree, which brings food and life to both myths. The tree gives food and fruits to the sky people and is a center of peoples lives, everything revolves around it. Also in the movie “Avatar” there is a tree called “The Tree of Souls” which is the center of Na'vi culture and religion. The Na'vi believe it allows them to communicate directly with Eywa, their mother goddess. The third archetype is a “Mother Figure” which both myths share. Both women fall from the sky with innocence, and the women from “Woman Who Fell..” gives birth to a baby girl and nurtures her then later who gives birth to mankind which are twins. This relates to everybody because we all have mothers who nurture us and comforts us. The fourth archetype that they share is the great “Turtle” who is the center of the earth. In both myths the turtle piles dirt on his back to create land for the women to survive. This relates to a movie called “Kun-Fu Panda” which the Turtle is the wise one and knows everything that is going to happen. The fifth archetype is “Twins” which is only in “Woman Who Fell..”, which represents opposing principles. The twins are like yin and yang, one is good and the other is evil. They both find new land and start creating things around the earth, the evil one creates something horrible which make the good one kill the evil one. This archetype relates to a Roman Myth called “Romulus and Remus” which both twins are abandoned by their mother and raised by a wolf, then founded and…

Considerable attention is given to a specific set of myths: those stories that deal with the creation of the world. Cosmogonic myths try to resolve the problem of man's search for meaning in existence“. Accounts of the beginning of the world are the quintessential form of myth” (Paden, 1994, p. 85). Different stories of creation are evidence of different worldviews. Hopi and Japanese creation myth deals with the origin of human kind. While they both narrate how the world and human being were created, they utilize different metaphors. The Japanese myth imagines chaos at the beginning. Earth and heavens came together to create harmony. Cosmos and order were brought where disorder and infinite operated. Void was filled and many divinities appeared. They were created in order to organize and “preside over the land, sea, mountains, river, trees and herbs” (Japanese Creation Myth). For Hopi, gods…
