Early civilizations often had many similarities in their politics, economies, and social norms. The civilizations of Mesopotamia, or the Fertile Crescent (3000 BCE), and the Nile River Valley (3000 BCE) are prime examples of this, but with different geography, leaders, and resources many differences divided the two nations. Both the Nile River Valley and the Fertile Crescent had authoritarian governments and mainly agricultural economies, but the Nile River Valley was much more unified, while Mesopotamia’s city-states were constantly battling. Even though both nations were dynasties, they found their leaders in different ways.…

Mesopotamia and Egypt are both similar because of their civilizations being located on a river system. The Egyptians had the Nile River and its delta that led in to the Mediterranean Sea. The Sumerians had the Tigris and Euphrates rivers that led into the Persian Gulf. Both of these rivers flooded, depositing silt onto the ground that would fertilize the soil. This would allow for agriculture and for huge populations to settle and grow in these regions. The Nile River flooded annually and the Tigris and Euphrates flooded randomly which could lead to a good or bad crop season. For ancient civilizations to exist, they needed to be located along rivers because they were a source of fresh water that is necessary for life. It also gives the settlement a good form of transportation up and down the river. Also, the water is used for farm animals to drink.…

After the Agricultural Revolution, the rise of civilizations scattered around the world, each one having various features that formed from their people and the land. Two civilizations that honed similarities and differences, Mesopotamia and Egypt, grew and adapted alongside river valleys—the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the Nile respectively. Both civilizations turned to control and unify their people through ideas of class hierarchy and kingship. However, Mesopotamian life differed from Egyptian life, consisting of troubles in their crop production, negative viewpoints about death in their religious beliefs, and more restrictions for slaves and women.…

Mesopotamia lies between these two rivers. In greek, Mesopotamia is known as “land between the rivers”. These rivers were a huge essential need to the survival of the Mesopotamian civilization. Once a year, these rivers would flood. Floods are usually thought of as bad, but in this case they allowed for farming to thrive. When these rivers flooded, silt (mud/soil) was carried by them, which resulted in rich soil being placed all over the land. This allowed farmers to plant and harvest large amounts of wheat and barley. The rivers also provided food, water, and protection.…

They were both built in between rivers and both were clever enough to learn to build irrigation systems to effectively water crops and control flooding. They both had invented written languages, Pictograms and Cuneiform, which both have influenced language to this day. They both also upheld patriarchal systems, in which the men had all control over power and women were seen as little more than objects. In Shang little boys were coddled while the girls were given chores, and in Mesopotamia marriage regulations went so far as to cover the women from head to foot to prevent them from having their innocence taken. Both also had five different sections of social ranking that were similar in detail, where the monarch was on top, the noble and wealthy a step beneath, the artisans and successful owners who owned land proceeding, the people with no land but skills and jobs nonetheless, and finally, the unskilled, lacking of kinship ties, and…

There are many similarities that characterize the two governments of Egypt and Mesopotamia. For example, both civilizations had manuscripts and inscriptions. These were written down to make sure that civilians would understand, follow, and obey their laws. These law writers were called Scribes. Their job would be writing things down. Sometimes, there were the only people in the land who were literate. This way, when people were caught disobeying a law, they could not escape the consequences. Also, both Egypt and Mesopotamia had to pay taxes. There were citizens in charge of collecting them. Moreover, the two had kings that were thought to be descendents from the gods. Both surmised that the kings were related gods in the skies. As to that…

Where did these ancient civilizations form? Ancient Egypt formed along the nile river. The nile provided water and fertile ground for the people of Egypt. The river flooded in a consistent pattern which made it easier for growing crops. Due to the surrounding desert the people of ancient egypt had to live within fifty miles of the river. The rest of the area was uninhabitable due to no water. The ancient civilization of Mesopotamia formed between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The rivers were again a major part of the civilization due to the water needed for crops. These rivers however were…
