Compare And Contrast Essay On The Call Of The Wild
In the novel entitled Call of the Wild tells about a story about a dog named Buck, and how he managed to survive in the harsh wild from coming from a domesticated household. How he learns to adapt from the warm comfort to his home to the harsh winters of Alaska.While on his journey through the Wilderness he learns new traits and skills. In the novel Call of the Wild , is it illustrated that Knowledge is better than Instinct it is shown by the law of club and fang, adapting to environments from peers, and don't go down in a fight. Firstly, the law of club and fang is learned not given through birth. Buck had a hard time dealing with the law of club and fang because he never knew what it was. Buck was beaten extremely due to the fact he never knew what it really mean,“A

man with a club is a law-maker, a man to be obeyed, but not necessarily conciliated.(34)” Buck didn't understand that the man with the club is the man at the top of the command chain and he was at the bottom. If you didn't obey him it would be dealt with extreme punishment which could lead to death. If Buck did not gain this knowledge through him beating him almost to death, Buck would have died. Instinct cannot teach you this law.
In Addition, when Buck went into the wilderness he had no idea what to do. When he needed to go to sleep but it was too cold he didn't know what to do until he realized what the other dogs were doing. Without him analyzing what his peers were doing he could have been froze to death.”Another lesson. So that was the way they did it, eh? Buck confidently selected a spot, and with much fuss and wasted effort proceeded to dig a hole for himself. In a trice the heat from his body filled the confined space and he was asleep.(15)” Buck had no idea how to survive in those circumstances until he gained the knowledge of that digging under ground could give you warmth. He may know how to dig a hole but he didn't know how to use it to full potential. If all he knew was his Instincts he would of just curled up in a ball doing nothing and dying of the harsh winter.
Furthermore, Buck also learned never to fall down in a fight.
When Buck first saw his first fight it completely changed his way of thinking. He gained more knowledge through this experience.”So that was the way. No fair play. Once down, that was the end of you. Well, he would see to it that he never went down.” Buck never knew about fighting another dog or even killing a wild animal until he adapted to his surroundings. Through all his experiences he gained knowledge of how to fight and what move could decide the fate of your life in a split second. Buck never fell down in a fight because he knew what it meant, it meant death. Without clearly learning what this meant, he could of had the same mistake with his life take,
