Compare and contrast essay
Ruger Precision or FN Competition Sixteen hundred dollars might seem like a lot to spend on a gun without optics, but is it too much compared to a two-thousand dollar AR15? There is a large debate on what style of rifle to use for long range, competition, and hunting shooting. Some of the older generations say, “ A rifle is one where you have to pull the bolt back every time you pull the trigger” (Nichols, Jerry). I believe a rifle is anything that you want it to be. For this experiment I have chosen to test the Ruger Precision rifle in 5.56 NATO ($1,600) and the FN America Competition AR15 in 5.56 Nato ($2,500.) The areas compared will be application, cost, and specs. The Ruger …show more content…
Precision rifle in 5.56 Nato comes at a hefty price of sixteen hundred dollars, three times the cost of my first car. This may seem spendy, but for some such as long range shooters and the hosts of Fox Pros “Foxpro Furtakers” this is a small price to pay for accuracy. “What other factory rifle, so competitively priced, could be counted on to shoot half-MOA five shot groups?” (Von Benedikt, Joseph). It also isn’t lacking in stock features such as the precision adjustable stock that Magpuls comparable stock comes in around two-hundred fifty dollars. It is also equipped with the same trigger guard, hand grip, and Magpuls ten round P-Mag stock from the factory. The other specs are comparable with those of a much more expensive rifle such as a muzzle break, 20” barrel, and Magpul metal forward grip. The stock has an adjustable comb height, LOP (length of pull), and the stock open towards the shooter and the bolt is able to come out with ease. All of this and it weighs in at only 9.8 lbs. The FN America’s Competition AR-15 is an impressive rifle boasting a weight of only 8.1 lbs.
It is primarily used for competition shooting, hence the name, but it is versatile to other applications in self defense and hunting predators. It was used in the 2015 National 3 Gun Finals and was well received by consumer much like the Ruger Precision. It is also applicable for predator hunting as the primary rifle. Although it comes in with a price tag of twenty five hundred dollars, before optics, it is well worth the price to professional and recreational shooters alike. It is more than likely that this cost which is close to double that of the Ruger Precision is due to the aluminum construction along with the chrome lined barrel and a little of the FN name. It comes standard with a Magpul adjustable stock comparable to the Ruger Precision’s without the comb adjustment. It also has a muzzle break and a Magpul P-MAG stock along with the Ruger. Its chrome lined barrel is measured at 18”, two inches shorter than the Ruger and 39” overall length. The forward guard is almost a twin to that of the Precision with the added accessory of picatinny rail and M-LOCK features provided by Magpul. For the left handed shooter it comes equipped with an ambidextrous bolt release. Which proves it to be an all around great
firearm. Although the guns come with a hefty price tag they are well worth the money. With both coming with Magpul hand grips, trigger guards, and P-Mag’s standard. Along with the proven accuracy and names of both FN and Ruger you know you are getting the best rifle for your money. The Ruger with a sixteen hundred dollar price tag and the FN with an even larger twenty five hundred price tag these are not rifles for the faint of heart, but for those who can afford the added cost it all comes down to the application and features you are looking for. The FN being a great three gun primary. The Ruger being more for long range shooting and varmint hunting. These are truly two great rifles.
