Compare and Contrast Facebook vs Twitter
The development of social networking has become more and more prevalent in society today. Before the 20th century the only way to communicate was by telephone, but as time passed, improvements in technology allowed us to stay connected with friends and family easier. As of 2012 Facebook stands as the largest Social Networking Site(SNS) in the world. Although there are many Social Networking Sites on the internet there is only one other that follows close behind the footsteps of Facebook. Twitter, which was founded two years after Facebook in 2006 has over 500 million active users today while Facebook has 955 million. You could consider both sites as important social and economic characteristics of certain peoples everyday life. When I want to look someone up and know more about them I turn to Facebook where I can find pictures, bios, and different information about that person. Now Twitter is a lot different than Facebook it only gives you one picture of that person and very little information regarding that person. However it is a very good tool to keep up with that person. Although I am a active user on both sites I think Facebook will ultimately dominate all SNS and come out on top always. Twitter is a Social Networking Site that delivers short 140 characters or less news updates on your close friends, sports, celebrities, businesses, or news channels. Each status update is called a "tweet". Based on the graph published by DigitalSurgeons in 2010, more than half of the users on twitter are either in college or just graduated college, which to me means it is aimed more at a young adult audience.Known for its ability to keep users information private it rather than Facebook's reputation for exposing peoples private information, Twitter will always be better at keeping users privacy. Twitter is also a great place to get news fast. In fact following such news channels as CNN, Fox, BBC, and The New York Times is a quicker way to see the news rather than turning on

There are three different social media networks that I have used ,still use, and one that I have not used myself. MySpace is one of the ones that really got social media networking to where it is now. I used to use MySpace to talk to friends, share pictures, listen to music, and share my blogs. These were the main functions that I used MySpace for. MySpace was one of the first big steps that lead other social media networking where it is. Being able to interact with your friends and family in a virtual world is a big success to being able to so be many places at once. Facebook is another social media networking tool that took the world by surprise and has also took over MySpace users. With Facebook you are able to share photos, express what is on your mind with your friends and family, write messages between you and others, and stay connected with people all over the world. Facebook came and conquered most of, if not all, social media networking web sites. The main thing that separated Facebook from any other social media web site is that it was made for college students. Little by little it became so popular that everyone wanted to be a part of this network. Businesses really took advantage of the social networking site for advertising. With so many advertising competitors on the network, it is hard for users not to take advantage of the products advertised. Businesses even have commercials that tell to “like” them on Facebook to ensure the attention of the social media users. The latest installment to the social media networking web sites that I have not used is Twitter. Twitter is different in its own way for various reasons. Twitter allows people to, share their posts or “tweets” with all of their friends at once or certain people that want to see your posts. Everything that you can do in the other two social networking sites is done completely different in the Twitter world. When you add friends they are either…

Sara Ridenour, in her chapter entitled "Facebook's little sister, Twitter.", elaborates on several different facets of Twitter that, in her point of view, lead to the development of greater tolerance and empathy towards each other amongst its users. She explains that Twitter users are not that concerned about the information they share on the website being public as they are aware that every other user's information is also available which leads to their expectance of more tolerance. I only partially agree with this idea because Twitter provides tweeters with the choice to either accept what other users are sharing or to completely ignore their ideas by un-following them or even blocking them. This option actually promotes intolerance as people…

Next, each social network is aimed to a specific part of the population, and their members are the ones who keep the social network working. As said before, Facebook is the social network with more members because almost everybody can use it. Sometimes it can be a good thing to have all your friends around, but it can also be an awful idea to be friends with strangers, and to be constantly bombarded with spam. Unfortunately, because of the…

However, Twitter, the micro blogging site started in 2006, has forced Facebook onto a collision course despite having some key difference between the sites. Facebook has about 150 million users, compared with twitter’s 6 million. And the users of twitter are in increasing number. The monopoly held by Facebook as a social networking site now appears to be threatened by twitter. Facebook in the past was once threatened by MySpace and LinkedIn but has since gained momentum in the years gone by.…
