Massive developments in technology and industrialization led European powers such as England and France to attempt to extend their power to regions like Africa. While England and France both colonized Africa, enhancing education systems, France did this to regain lost land, while England did this for natural resources. Additionally, France navigated Senegal and the Senegal River with the use of gun-boat diplomacy, whereas England went about conquering African regions with the use of the Maxim Machine Gun. England colonized Africa because they required natural resources to to continue industrializing, whereas France wanted to conquer land they had lost in battles such as the Seven Years War. Also, while both France and England positively affected African education systems, England did this with new technological advances in weaponry, while France used gun-boat diplomacy.
